Some guys and I have been talking about shortening the rifle hunt on the Nebo Unit to 5 days again because the buck/doe ratio is below objective. Right now its 10/100. I believe the DWR shouldnt manage the whole Central Region as one big region but micromanage some areas where the deer numbers are lower. We should manage those areas a little different and a little more restrictive to give the deer a chance to make a come back. I think when buck/doe ratios are low then the DWR should pay more attention to those areas to get the buck/doe ratios and the overall deer herd back up.

What do you guys say?

im totally in agreeance on this one and have thought the same thing for quite a while. i love this region and have harvested a couple good deer on the central mountain unit.... ive watched it go from having quality all over to just having quality deer in the right spots. this unit is especially hit hard because as far as the central unit is concerned it gets more than its fair share of all the tagholders for this region. you put up the petition and ill sign it!

I think the DWR needs and should do more habitat projects on this unit. The area known as Doc Steeles use to be a pretty nice hay farm and every fall and winter you would see both elk and deer on this piece of land by the hundreds. But once the DWR bought it then it basically turned into a worthless weed patch. I think the DWR needs to use Dedicated hunters to plow and replant this area with good habitat for both elk and deer. The DWR make claims they are spraying to kill the weeds, but they have told me this for the last 6 years and it doesnt take that long to kill the weeds. They should be plowing it up before everything goes to seed and planting it in the spring to make sure it has plenty of moisture to grow and end up being a successful project.

I totally agree as well, but it will never happen.
I have brought this same issue up about ALL regions at rac meetings. They say there is not enough man power (officers) to patrol "micro managed areas".

so question is how many more officers would they really need? generally all they do now is set up road stations here and there? would they really set up a station for every unit? NOT IN UTAH! all they would do is set up a station on the biggest units and even if someone stopped from another unit all they would do is ask where it came from like they do when you stop anyway.... not enough officers is a lame excuse!!!!!

DITTO tabby, my thoughts exactly.
I really wanted to see the southeastern unit busted up into a couple places where there were some antler point restrictions or something else that might be beneficial on a mountain range or two, but their story was "not enough law enforcment to micro manage. There's only enough to have a couple in each BIG unit as it is now".

so how about a compromise with the state.... why not just micro manage a couple areas and leave some of the lesshunted areas huge....... that seems fair on both parts. at least till people like it more than the system now and end up wanting the whole state changed..

For your information - I will be pushing real hard to get the Nebo management unit seperated from the Central Region in regards to season length, number of tags issued etc. Hopefully we can get the other RAC members and the DWR folks to buy into managing it seperately. I believe it could be very beneficial.
