My youngest daughter 10 year old Rachel drew the 3rd Peaks cow hunt (her first elk hunt) and my youngest boy Weston age 14 drew the 3rd peaks bull/"any elk" tag! Very fun hunts!! these hunts are in the "Limited Opportunity" hunts section.

22 South early muzzy! The same tag I drew in 09 so I'm fairly familiar with the area.

You draw with 11? We have 12 so are counting on it next year.

Codylee, back to back , now thats got to be fun. Thats a unit Im really interested in. How did you do last year?

Zim, I had 13 going into draw, still not sure why I didn't draw last year with my partner who did with 12. May work out for best since it allows me to ride his experience in the area. Now all I need is to convince the wife this tag is a good reason to update from my old Switchback to that new Hoyt Spider I've been seeing in all those hunting mags.

I killed a bull the second to last night of the hunt, it was really the 1st time I really got after it, my wife had a tag as well and I spent most the hunt helping her, she got some shots at some great bulls, but unfortunately it didn't all come together for her...still best hunt of her life though! We were sitting seperare spots the night I killed my bull, here is a link to my kill shot!

He scored 339 5/8 gross! As u will see, I was pretty stoked!!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-04-13 AT 11:03AM (MST)[p]Regarding unit 1 early archery, they filled out the NR cap last year in the 12 point pool, leaving 8 guys without tags. This year, most of the guys who had 11 points last year (42) bailed for other units, dropping the needed point level way down into the 11 point pool.
I drew tag #15 with 11 points, so if every tag up to that point went to a NR, they still pulled another 20 NR from that pool. Significant in that not a single 11 point NR drew that hunt last year. I will have my numbers next week to see if any dropped to the 1-2 pass draw.

Congrats Cody, nice little vid too.

CWeeks,
Have you hunted it before? I did in 2002 and got a 340". Only 150 NR tags back then. Quality has slipped, but that was a crazy easy hunt in the easiest terrain I've ever elk hunted. The Arizona unit summary was spot on with their recommendations. Just be on the north sides of any of those little knobs each morning and you will be in bulls.

Are you aware of the burned areas? Less cover, but I bet the bigger bulls will be in there.

Thanks. A friend filming a muzzy hunt there and your insight sealed it as the only unit I was going to apply for.
Just need to do my part now.

Zim, It will be my first time in unit 1, but my partner got a 340+ bull in there last year on the third morning and had seen 3 bigger bulls before he shot that one. I'm pretty pumped, you guys can have 9 and 10, I'll take my tag and jump back in the points game(2 permanent ones are sweet).

CWeeks, That is good to hear your partner had that many good sightings over a short span. During my hunt in 2002 I only saw one that was for sure bigger than my harvest. It was about a 360" 7x7 I got good video of. Lots of 320's. If your partner gives you specific directions, I would go there. But you will find good bulls on any north slopes.

Cody,

I must say, great video. I watch that video everyday to get my day started right. Not sure if you have heard of a Professional Hunter named Stan Potts? Well, he is very stoked as you are when he shots his animal. Thats what basically put his name on the Hunting map... I love your excitement and nice Bull my friend!
