2013 will prove to be EVEN HARDER on Wasatch elk herds.
As if 4,400 antler-less draw permits WASN'T enough, NOW,
This year, there will be UNLIMITED control cow permits as-well..

http://wildlife.utah.gov/dwr/2013-a...4-how-to-obtain-a-2013-antlerless-permit.html

Not to mention the 100+ November LE bull tags....

Anyone else see a problem with this?

That's gonna be a slaughter fest. Dead elk everywhere on the Wasatch. This is gonna be worse than fishlake 2001. Get em while their hot boys...

Quote from the DWR link:

"Elk-control permits available

Utah Admin. Rule R657-5-33

During the 2013 season, the Division wants hunters to harvest as many antlerless elk as possible from 10 of Utah's hunting units:

Chalk Creek
East Canyon
Henry Mtns (elk and desert bighorn)
Morgan-South Rich
Nine Mile, Range Creek
San Juan, East of US-191
San Rafael, North
South Slope, Yellowstone
Wasatch Mtns, Currant Creek
Wasatch Mtns, Avintaquin
If you obtained a permit (including general season) to harvest a buck, bull or once-in-a-lifetime species on any of the above units (not including CWMUs), you have the option of purchasing an antlerless elk-control permit.

The elk-control permit allows you to harvest an antlerless elk in the same unit where you'll already be hunting an antlered big game animal. You may hunt the antlerless elk only during the season dates?and with the same weapon?listed on your buck, bull or once-in-a-lifetime permit."

So, Every general season deer tag holder, EVERY spike tag holder
can just buy cow permits, over the counter, and kill cows the same time.......Oh ya, LE and OIAL guys can do it too..........

Can you say 10K cow hunters on Avintaquin and Current Creek?

I hope the have traffic control for all of the road hunters, going to get messy. Was horrible up there last year with all of the added tags let alone everyone having one.

I only had one day to hunt this last year due to work and school, and I had a wasatch cow permit. I hunted the last day of the hunt. I hiked probably ten miles that day up into all of my favorite spots and saw more elk carcasses than I have ever seen before. Every couple hundred yards in the bottom of the canyons there would be a couple more. I literally saw over 40 carcasses. At one waterhole I sat until dark there was four carcasses right around it. The elk still came into it, but it was just too dark to shoot.

JFP!!!

There goes little Beav's PISSCUTTER!

You can Bet Your Azz they might want all the Cow Elk east of 191 San Juan killed but I'll bet there's a Bunch of High Dollar Clients that don't want all the Big Bulls killed!

Once again!

We gonna decimate some more Units due to Greed!

How bout it Rut?

We were East of 191 San Juan last Fall,How many Extra Elk did you see?

Ya,I know they migrate in to that Country,But SWEET GEEZUS,directly from LE Units,You kill them Late East of 191 You're Wiping the LE Units out!

I'll STFU now!

I've been told many times I'm not a UDWR Biologist!

You're Right,I'm not a UDWR Biologist & sure the HELL don't think you need to be one to see the Light!

SLAUGHTER THEM FOR MONEY is what it boils down to!

I'm really confused about this. I hunted the entire archery season last year and saw more bulls than cows. The biggest herd bull I was trying to get only had 7 or 8 cows. I ended up shooting one of the bulls that was harassing them. All the cows must be in a different part of the unit.

No YZ. It is similar to that all across the unit. I was out with you hunting, then when my hunt came I hunted a long ways away from where you were as well as growing up in the middle of this unit. It is a little better in some places but not much.

I am glad I drew my archery tag this year. At least I will get first crack before the "slaughter" begins.

Yeah. You did luck out. There will still be a couple years where you will be able to find a big bull. I had a tag last year and grew up up there and the herds are hurting and they are making it worse. I guess i will have to try to go south now.

Your right Hawkeye, Get a decent bull early, and get out!

The limited entry muzzy elk guys are going to get it bad..
General ML deer running at the same time, every single one
of them can buy the OTC cow permit!!!!

I dont think I would want a LE muzzy elk tag on the Wasatch
this fall.

The other bad part is. Any Tom, ##### and harry with an Archery or Rifle tag can get one as well. Those elk are going to have pressure like never before.

Yet another thing I didn't realize,
The cow control permits are only $30!,,Over the counter.
Verus the the application cow permits, $50 plus app fee = $60..

HALF price!

Anyone will be able to walk in Wallie world,
Buy a Rifle spike elk tag, PLUS a cow control permit for $80 ..

Thier going to have to put up traffic lights on Reservaion ridge
and the turn off to Current Creek..Wink ;-)

goofy I understand your concern and frustration this can not be good for the future hunting on the Wasatch.

One question so if I understand it correctly you must have a tag to purchase the extra Cow permit. So regarding the New late Elk hunt there will not be more hunters out in the field just the ones out can buy a Cow tag. Does this sound right or is there some other season going on at that time i'm not aware of?

If it Flies(I mean Walks/Runs!) It Dies!

You see movement,Shoot & Ask Questions later!

Think I'll keep PISSCUTTIN right where I'll never take a Big Bull!

A little concerned...I have a LE muzzleloader Elk tag. Hoping most hunters will not be unaware of the cow elk tags available.

Just a little concerned myself. Drew the muzzy tag as well and it's kinda hard to get very excited about it after listening to everybody on here. Guess I better quit reading these depressing threads and spend a little more time finding those hidey holes the bulls are gonna be hanging in after they get pushed from hell to breakfast. I still think it's gonna be a good hunt for the guy that's willing to "HUNT".

I made this chart for the 2012 season. It's going to be very interesting to see the trend over the next 5 years. Note: This is for bulls only.

I'm going to go just to watch all the low-lifes shooting off-hand..... from the middle of the road.... at running elk.... at over 750 yards. That's exactly what I saw last year. It sounded like a war zone with all the shooting. The sad fact is one of the retards got one so now they all think they're king shiite!
Dumbazzes!

The problem is this, the "hunters" don't report their kill, don't report their wounded animals and don't take care of the animal if they do get lucky! Because of this the F&G think harvest success is really low. ITS NOT, IT'S LIKE 180% SUCCESS when you look at it the right way!

We're in a pile of hurt now boys!

LAST EDITED ON May-30-13 AT 03:13PM (MST)[p]We were camped in currant creek this past fall. The camp next to us were newbies at elk hunting. My bro in law shot his elk opening morning. I went in to pack it out with him. We had to walk thru the other camp. We talked, they had a cow elk down but weren't sure of how to gut and quarter it. Long story short, they drove their wheeler off road to the elk and dragged it out. They ruined almost all the meat to spoilage so they left the carcass there in the camp and went home. My bro in law called the fng to report it. They came up and did their investigation. They decided not to prosecute becuz the hunters "made an effort"?!?!? WTF!!!!

The elk they shot was also in the wrong unit. They shot her on the opposite side of the road that splits the unit. The FnG knew that as well.

What I don't get is "Why does anybody want to shoot a cow elk..??!!" :) :)

I have to think that a lot of general season deer tag holders will buy one... And that's the biggest number of hunters- so, yeah, it'll probably make some money and I don't think it'll cost that many cows... But expect more hunters to stay longer on the unit.

I don't hunt down there... So I don't know how bad it already is.
