My dad and I both drew out Wasatch Limited Entry Archery Elk. Both of us had 6 points. Anybody want to share some success pics (rifle or archery) just to get the heart pumpin?

Here's the bull I took on the Wasatch archery hunt a couple years back... Fun hunt! Last two weeks are an absolute riot! Good luck, feel free to PM with any questions.

Congrats on a fun tag! I drew in 2011 and had a good time. In retrospect I would do things a little differently. I hit the first part of the hunt pretty hard on foot and should probably have been sitting on water since it was so hot. Don't burn yourself out early since the action tends to heat up the last week. That being said I believe your best shot at the big boys is early since they might not be cowed up entirely. I never really found a great water hole to sit that someone else wasn't already using but I think if I had to do it again I would have spent all my scouting time looking for active water holes off the beaten path to sit in August for a chance at a big boy. Last week is an awesome time to be calling but it ain't the Primo's videos. In my experience with trying to get on herd bulls was getting busted by cows repeatedly and being pretty frustrated at times-but you have to try. I did get some great looks at mature bulls- some herd and some satellite but if I had the tag again I would put my call down other than a tool to locate. Then once I found them I'd either try to pattern them or sneak in their beds. Just my two cents of what I took away from that hunt.

Good luck!

Here is a link to the bull I arrowed on this unit:

Congrats! Check out some of my videos in the clips section from the last couple years. They are all wasatch bulls. Just search under my user name and let me know.

Calif-

I drew with 6 points this year. I am not sure if I drew with max points or in the random draw.

bucksmut said it perfectly. If I had to do it over again I'd do exactly as he suggested.

Ozz the thirds on that beast are awesome.

True story. if it hot sit water, they have to drink every day in hot weather, Bulls in rut need mud to cool off.
Sometimes you can find those water holes by following those herds by tracking them backward from bedding area to water hole.
following bees will lead ya to water too.
We make a small catch basin for a small trickle of water(inches wide and barely any water on surface) by putting in rock and small logs and diggin it out about 2 ft deep, it filled up and with in days it was a major wallow and now 20 years later it still is a go to place,The great part was the trees that was in shooting distance of it that work great for a stand. So this summer see if you can find a place out of the way and make up a wallow and a spot for them to come too, Keep in mind wind flow and cover ( Bedding areas close by) if you don't have a good trees to put your stand in around the water hole, move up or down the trail until you find one that you can use.
You can always make a water hole by bring in water in 55 gallon drums and coating(clay) the bottom of a small water hole. Good luck.

It's not an archery bull but it is a Wasatch elk from a couple years ago. My oldest daughter has had quite a run of nice animals.
It was a tough hunt even though it was a "rut" rifle hunt.
Very rewarding for us because of all the days in the field together and the great friends and family who helped!

I can't wait until I have your tag.... after LE deer + a decade more. haha

This actually shows it off a bit better.

Have a great hunt! You've received some excellent suggestions!

Zeke

Officially it scores "zero"!
Unofficially (with me measuring) is grosses 356".
I think the gross score is pretty Legit +/- a couple inches.

My brother has the rifle tag this year and is cautiously excited. He's been on the mountain with me dozens of times and knows how tough it can be even under ideal circumstances.

Good luck to all!

Zeke

Well I have the Late tag and my hunt would be over if I get the Chance at a Bull that size .

Oh nice oilca!
You should have a GREAT hunt!
There are still some really nice bulls up there. I saw several shooters on the spike hunt so I know they're still alive.
Good luck to all,
Zeke

This is my 2010 archery bull. Tough hunt. My suggestion is to find water, wallows that they use and sit on them until you kill one. I shot mine just before noon in 80+ degree temps. He was coming in to cool off. Good luck.

If this thread doesn't get your blood pumping, nothing will!
Nice stuff guys!
Great advice for the hunters too.
I hope that you guys will leave at least 1 good bull for my brother on his rifle hunt.
Zeke

This is an awesome thread! I drew the wasatch muzz tag and can hardly wait! Thanks guys for the pics and comments.

>tag....someday.

Awesome I was just curious I live in Oregon and have been putting in for points for quite a few years now I assumed you were in a close state. Great story again it helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel and I hope the wait is worth it when it happens and I do finnaly draw a tag in Utah.

We tried to find this guy on the muzzy hunt last year but just couldn't turn him up.... He may still be out there.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-06-13 AT 10:41AM (MST)[p]I have a Wasatch archery tag burning a hole in my pocket and I am so distracted that I can hardly even focus. If something does not change, my wife might kill me before the hunt even opens. I am driving her crazy!

Thanks for the photos and stories. Please keep them coming.

CD, did that bull have a "backscratcher" drop on his right side as well? Kinda hard to tell from your pic. I watched a bull the last week of the archery hunt that looked a lot like that bull but he had a drop on both sides.

Ps, I have a Wasatch Archery tag as well and let me tell ya'll I can't think about anything but chasing big stinky's this fall as well :)

Keep up the great posts and pics. and thanks for sharing!!!

Well guys, I feel for you because of your illness! NOT

I don't even have a tag and it's still about all I can think about! I'm excited for you guys and about all I get to do this year is tag along on an archery and a rifle hunt.

You guys will have to all become good actors! When you're around the wife, just pretend nothing great is coming in August/September! I know it will be difficult but you guys can do it. After 36 years of marriage I have it perfected??? LOL

Zeke

I have two friends that drew the Wasatch archery this year. I think I'm more excited then they are. I know what's in store. the nice thing is I get to hunt, without all the anxiety. It's a big tag. Lots of pressure. Here's my bull from last year.

Man this thread is awesome! I am excited for all of the tag holder no matter what they drew. I have not drawn an elk tag in 16 years I hope that I draw a good tag someday! Until then I live through you guys thank you for sharing!

>him this year! :)

Ts, I would be shocked if he's still alive, I'm pretty sure I wasn?t the only one to find him. But there are many more good mature bulls out there!

Redelk, he is/was a clean six on the other side, double drop would be very very cool, good luck!

Thanks CD. The bull I saw that last week was rutting pretty hard and had close to 50 cows, so I plan to be in that general area, hoping he comes back to his stomping grounds to find "his" cows once again this year....

If he made it :)

Holy crap! That turned out a lot better then I expected! Lol
I can't thank you guys enough for all the info and tips and to all you guys and gals that posted pics, a huge congrats. All of them are beautiful bulls:) My dad and I can't even think strait! We are so excited for this hunt!
Also my little bro drew his Youth Any Bull Tag, this is going to be a Fun year for sure! :)

Awesome bull Zeke, with my daughters wasatch hunt this year I hope to show a picture just like your in November!! Great job buddy!!

Wow it seems like everyone that drew an archery tag for the Wasatch is here on MM. ;) I was also lucky in drawing the archery tag. I'm not used to these early dates but it sure seems like there are plenty of good bulls taken regardless of the dates. Good luck to all of you with tags and thanks to those sharing past hunts. See ya on the mountain.

Mr. Broadfork.

You did not tell me when we ran into you and the fam on Friday night that you were scouting for elk again. It was good seeing you up there again and I am sure I will see you up there some more. Again congrats on a great archery bull. I will keep my eyes open for moose for you and your friend as well.

Some great bulls! Well I also drew the tag to add to everyone else so there'll be no shortage of us in the woods. I've been up a few times so far and haven't seen much (except deer). Took some time to hang with the family over the last month so now I can dedicate my time to scouting.
The area I've been in is farther north than I initially though I'd go but I think it might be pretty good.
Good luck to everyone. Any advice is always appreciated!

Later.

Awesome thread guys and congrats to all. I also drew the late tag and I'll tell you what time is sure dragging along. Definitely looking forward to all the success stories to come off the Wasatch this year and good luck to everyone with a tag!

HAHA same thing is going on at my house. I have Fishlake late and I can think of little else. I am constantly pouring over maps and articles, it is awesome! Hey it is pretty much once in a lifetime unless you get lucky. Our obsession is justified.
