Son Kisses Wild Elk

While out doing some shed hunting in NE Oregon near the snake river, we came across TONS of elk out feeding in the canyons. On the way back to town we noticed a small herd of 8 cows and one bull about 250yrs off the gravel road. I pulled over so the boys could take a look.

The bull started walking towards our truck and then walked back and forth along the fence line, as we sat there in shock. I decided to get out of the truck and see how close I could get.

Long story short, we touched, fed, scratched and fondled that bull for over 20 minutes! The cows stood back calling and running back and forth the entire time we were there! At one point the young bull pissed all over himself like he was in the rut! BTW there are NO elk farms here in NE Oregon. Here's some pics of our "once in a life time" adventure...

PS Sorry for the sideways pics!

Dangerous. That elk will be killed by the DNR soon enough after it attacks a person...

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Really, that's all you could come up with?!?

Very cool experience, a lil strange, but cool none the less...

I think he is referring to another thread where a lady gets too close to a moose and the F&G killed the moose because it beat her up.

I do find it interesting that everyone on the moose thread thought the lady was an idiot for getting within 10 yds of a moose but the majority of the people on this thread think it's neat that the kid kissed a bull elk. Maybe it would be dumber if he was 60 like the lady.

I would not allow my kids to get that close to a wild animal, TOO many unknown variables and way too many examples of the animal kicking ass. I feel that elk should have been taught a lesson, punched in the face, shot with rubber bullets, something to teach him that humans should be feared. Somebody obviously got that bull tame some how and eventually he will end up hurting someone.

>Hope that elk isnt that friendly
>come hunting season!!

If he is, he won't be for long...Mtn's been watching those 'When Animals Attack' videos... ;-) He's right though, you do never know, tame, wild or other...

Cool pics!

In answer to the question about the difference between this an the moose thread, I doubt anyone would be saying "cool" if this was pics or a video of two kids getting stomped by an elk. All is well that ends well....right?

Cool pic, and cool experience for the kids. I know elk can jump a fence, but the fence is a pretty good buffer in the pic to ward off a quick kick from the elk. The kids probably had a better chance of getting bit by a rattlesnake than getting attacked by the elk.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-11-13 AT 05:33PM (MST)[p]Thanks Roy for fixing the pics!

I've got some video footage as well but not sure how to post it up? The elk out there are on a nature conservancy (35K acres)...for a small $15K donation you can hunt it apparently :)

Thanks for the comments...
