Here is the story and pics of our Wyoming hunt. This was the first hunt that my wife had ever been on. She recently got her hunter's safety card and so I decided to put her in for a Wyoming deer hunt and she luckily drew out. At least I thought it was lucky, she was not quite as excited. She only got the hunter's safety card because my 9 year old son was taking the class and needed an adult with him.
Anyway, we backpacked in to the Wyoming high country and I must say that my wife was a trooper to hike in with me as far as we did. Here is a pic of us headed up the mountain...
It is tough to find a level place on this mountain, and after some serious work this is the best place we could find for our tent.
The afternoon before the opener, we spotted only three deer. Two small bucks and the one we ended up getting. We were lucky to spot him for only a couple of minutes as he stood to feed and then went back in the trees. It was enough of a look to know if we could find him in the morning we would take him.
Luckily the next morning I was able to spot him laying down across the canyon. He was in a good place for a stalk and we were able to get close enough for a shot. We waited for him to stand up and a short time later he did. My wife hit him the first shot knocking him down and with one follow up shot she had her first buck.
I could not have been prouder of my wife. She did a great job, although she did not want anything to do with helping me clean, quarter, and cape her buck. This is what my pack looked like coming off the mountain. That is one heavy pack.
This is what he looked like back at base camp. He is a 4x4 with good eyeguards, 27" wide and scores right at 170.
This was a great hunt that neither of us will ever forget.
