Southern CO deer question...

Hello all, new here. Have been visiting off and on for a couple years, great site. I hunted elk in the South San Juan Wilderness (units 78/81)a couple years ago and saw some deer (does and small bucks) along the roads and in the valleys. The area we hunted was pretty much all dark timber so I am sure any deer saw or heard us coming before we had a chance to see them, but we did not see many deer while hunting. We hunted around 9000 ft. and did not go above timberline.
I have seen alot of pictures of the areas above timberline and it looks like great country. Is the area lacking something like not enough browse, aspen groves or winter range to support alot of deer? Seem like some big deer would come out of this area. What does a person look for or what makes for good habitat besides just looking good? Anyone have any experience hunting here?

Thanks,

David
