Hey guys I am looking for some info on unit 61 elk first season rifle and archery. My dad has 20 pts and I have 18 just looking for some general spots to check out so I can start scouting for next year or the year after this year.thanks

Been 21 years since I hunted archery in that unit. I hunted from Deep canyon to the Mesa/Montrose county line. Camped out there in 2010 and saw a good 7x7 in deep canyon and a good 6x6 on the south side of the tongue as well as many smaller 5x6s,5x5s and so on. Elk are here today and gone tomorrow. If you see a good bull in the evening, by the next morning he might be in the juniper/pinyon,two canyons over,or unit 62 by morning. Last time I drew the tag, we arrived on Labor Day about 5:00PM, threw our gear in the cabin and headed for Deep Canyon. From the rim we could see 75 to 100 elk spread everywhere with 5 to 6 bulls bugling. I couldn't talk anybody into going down there that late ( I should have gone by myself),so we came back next morning-nothing-saw no elk, heard no bugling. Biggest piece of advice I can give is "strike while the irons hot". Never hunted the rifle season ,but the rancher we stayed with also guided rifle hunters and told us the saddle out towards the end of the tongue was a good spot during the gun seasons. Good luck with your hunts.

I had the archery tag in "08." Great hunt. My Partner had the first rifle in "11." He missed a great bull, passed on 5, 300+s and ate tag soup. The first rifle is 5 days. If I had the rifle tag I'd scout for a week before the season.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-13 AT 05:50AM (MST)[p]I've got a muzzleloader tag for this year. Although I haven't hunted the unit for 21 years, I've been keeping my eye on it. Hunt deer when I can in unit 62 with bow and muzzleloader and always take a day or two to glass unit 61. Theres alot of elk in those canyons and sidewalls, just a matter of finding the one you want.

Califelkslayer gave you the best advise....on my hunt is spent 2 trips in the summer learning roads/access. then showed up 5 days before the hunt and found the elk...passed on a good 340 and a HUGE 5 point the 1st day....mistake....saw elk everyday lots of bulls and cows, killed a 6 point on the last morning. great hunt for a 300 class bull, should be lots of elk talk early.
