Muzzy Load for La Sal Elk

My wife drew a La Sal Mtns (Utah) Muzzy Elk tag this year. I am trying to work up a good load for her. I have shot Powerbelt bullets in the past, but I never felt like they shot that well out of my TC Omega.

I have also heard some negative reviews on Powerbelt bullets and how they don't always expand properly.

Does anybody have a good elk load they'd recommend? I would prefer one that will shoot well with Triple 7 pellets.

I'm hoping to make it down there the first part of August to scout, find some good areas to hunt, and a decent place to camp. This is the first good elk hunt for both of us, so we have a bit to learn. I'll post pics when I have them.

Thanks in advance for the help, guys.

The Barnes expander MZ and the spitfire T-EZ have worked well for me. The T-EZ is way easier to load in my knight rifle. It has a tight bore. I never had any luck with the power belts from an accuracy stand point.

I used the 295 gr powerbelt they shot great from my Omega 130gr.(2-50 & 1-30) 777 pellets. sight in about 6" high at 100 hit a tad low(2") at 200 put the crosshair on the back bone so a little daylight is showing, That should get you where you can hit the target area. I use archery elk targets to practice with.
I use 150 gr if I know I'm going to shoot longer distances due to the area I'm hunting. But this should give you a start.

I am touching 3 shots at 100 yds with my CVA Accura and 245 Powerbelts. I am going to give the Barnes TM-Z a go though just because I like the all copper bullet. I don't really know how much it matters if a .50 cal bullet expands? I mean most expanded bullets arent that big and they kill game just fine.

My buddy uses the Barnes TM-Z with 2 of the Tripple 7 pellets and has had great success. He shoots a T/C, but dont know what model. It is about 10 years old I think.

Also grizzly my buddy has an archery tag for the La Sal this year and I plan on going with him. I will try and keep you informed of what we are seeing.

I used to shoot Hornady 250 grain sabots out of my Omega. I had a hard time with the PowerBelt. I started out with PowerBelt but after about 20 shots and no accuracy I switched to the Hornady 250 grain and saw instant accuracy. I would use more than 250 grain for elk though, probably 300 grain. Good luck.

I will throw in a vote for the Barnes expander MZ. Have shot them for 12-15 plus years. Have bagged numerous deer and elk with them. They have performed awesome for me. Shot wellout of five different guns I own or have owned.

Out of my triumph I've had good look with the hornaday FPB in 350 grain killed several elk with them. But keep in mind a heavy bullet will have more recoil than a lighter bullet, which may cause flinching. My wife shoots 90 grains of BH 209 and a 250 Barnes T-EZ pretty light recoil and good for elk to 150 yards. Whichever bullet you decide I would defiantly use the BH 209 powder you won't regret it.

Thanks guys. It sounds like I should try the Hornady and the Barnes bullets and see which shoot better. Though I don't know if I should take muzzleloading advice from a guy named "hangfire". ;-)

Now I just got to make it down to La Sal Mtns and see if I can find a place to camp and hunt. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Grizz,
I ran into the same issue the last few years with my TC. I could never get the consistancy I wanted out of Powerbelts. This year I did some research and ended up purchasing 300 grain Scorpion PT Gold bullets with the Crush Rib Sabot from Harvester Muzzleloading. I use two 777 60 grain magnum pellets and my consistency has been exceptional, I finally feel comfortable shooting beyond a hundred yards with open sights.
Give Harvester a look, a 12 pack of Scorpion PT Gold 300 grain bullets including the crush rib sabot goes for $10.99. Very resonable.
Good luck!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-17-13 AT 01:58PM (MST)[p]Thanks guys. I think I'm going to try the Barnes T-EZ first and see how they work. I found some pretty good articles on them by Chuck Hawks and others, especially for the TC guns. Hopefully they shoot well.

I think I'll also switch to BH 209 powder and see how 100-120gr loads shoot.

This is why I love this site. Everybody helping each other out. Thanks again.

(Now I just need to get one of you guys to give me the GPS coordinates of your honey hole ;-))

To avoid "hangfires" :D with the 209 powder you will need a hotter primer like the CCI 209M or federals 209A good luck and keep us posted.

Grizzly I will be archery hunting on the La Sal this year. Don't stress about camping spots they are plentiful. PM me and we can share details.
