Brilliant Hunters

So this past weekend I took my 4 little boys from the age of 2 to 8 up camping in Diamond Fork, part of the Wasatch elk unit. We ran into, or should I say, He came to our camp, a fellow hunter. He was asking a few questions about elk and if I had seen any. I told him what I had seen and asked why. He said he had an elk tag for this area. SO i assumed that he had drawn a LE elk tag for the wasatch. We talked about bulls and size and what not. He asked If I brought my elk calls. NO, they dont really talk right now. SO after a few minutes, I start to think that this hunter is not all that sharp. He mentions There are still tags available and that I should get one. WHAT???? He bought an over the counter any bull tag and thought that he could hunt any bull in this area.
HERE IS YOUR SIGN!!!

I told him to go back and read the regulations!

Unfortunately, this happens EVERY year in EVERY hunt unit in America.

People who only think about hunting 2 weeks a year, don't have many friends that hunt, don't subscribe to magazines or do the Monster Muley type thing, buy tags and simply read the regs to fit their own idea of the rules.

The bad part is, MANY of them get away with it and have no clue.

The ones that do get caught, plead ignorance, pay a small fine and ##### about what an ##### the Warden and the Judge were.......and in the end, neither they nor their small circle of friends think they did anything wrong at all.

"Being an idiot is NOT an art form. Give it up!"

I live and hunt in the middle of one of the best mule deer units in Montana. It's been a limited draw for over 10 years with only 25 tags available. Every year I run in to somebody looking for a big buck without the proper permit. Other guys just poach the deer. It's disgusting how many people have no idea of the regulations for particular areas. mtmuley

When my son was 13 years old he drew a Super Hunt Elk tag in Idaho. We went to Unit 40, basically camping out on top of South Mountain, a relatively small area. Watched bulls all summer and only saw maybe 3 other guys the whole time. There is only 5 tags for this hunt that openened Aug 30th at the time, plus 12 SH Tag's, so not more than 17 possible hunters.

Opening morning there were 3 UTV's parked at the look-out, trying to block the road to where we always glassed. There were 6 guys, all with rifles. They were pissed when I drove around their blockade in the dark and proceeded to set-up to glass. They said they had this mountain "covered". I asked "how many tags do you guys have", they said just one. I asked "which one of you is the lucky guy", they said none, he was on another ridge.

Needless to say I told them to "kiss my a$$" if they thought I was going to leave. Told them I had photo's of their plates in my phone and I was sending to F&G in case any of them got caught later. I wish I could say we killed a 400" bull while they were watching, but when it comes to some of these real trophy areas, it's amazing the hunting parties that come out. These guys pushed out most of the good bulls in 3-4 days and no one killed anything big. Makes you think maybe laws should limit carrying in the field unless you have a tag, but that's a hard one when you look at it from a gun rights perspective.

I'm as big of a 2nd amendment proponent as there is anywhere....I'd have ZERO issue with the regulation you mention. Of course it couldn't be a blanket application. I wouldn't apply it to 'non-hunting' type firearms. But if you're out in the hills during a hunt with a .300 win mag without a tag....well, we have some issues.

So what could they say they were doing or hunting there if none of them had a tag for elk and nothing else was open at the time? There is no way they should be able to carry like that during an open season with no tag for that zone!

I know what you mean, but they can always say they're hunting coyotes.

I don't like it, but I don't know how you stop it.

My friend saw two guys in camo riding a wheeler on National Forest in Idaho last week with two rifles on the rack. I have no idea what they were doing, but my buddy did call DWR and they said they'd look into it. Who knows what happened.

It makes me suspicious though to see that stuff, especially with how big of a problem poaching is.

PS. Tristate, please be an adult and respect my wishes that you do not respond to any of my posts. I, in turn, will do you the courtesy of not responding to any of yours. I simply do not wish to converse with you.

There are some idiots out there! I've ran into more than one guy who told me similar things. I've had to tell them about LE areas and how they weren't allowed to hunt there with their tags. Of course they always act all upset like it's my fault or something. I just don't understand the ignorance! Anytime I look into a new hobby or activity, I research as much as possible before "jumping" into it. Hunting isn't a sport to start on a whim and not read any of the rules!
