Anyone have any success calling elk after September.I will be hunting starting October 1st and thinking of taking a cow call with me.I will be hunting pressured elk ,but you never know.

Had late rifle tag in Arizona 2 years ago late November, small bulls were still bugling I cow called them right into camp was pretty cool.

The best rut activity I have ever seen was an area with barely any pressure I was calling bulls in on October 8th. And again have been in a high pressure area durin the same time had a bull about 80 yards behind a bunch of trees and softly cow called and he bolted out of the country. So it really depends on the pressure IMO.

In Colorado I have been able to get bulls to respond every year the first weekend of 1st rifle (about the 13th of Oct). Even in OTC, high pressure areas. After that I don't though. I locate them with their bugle then sneak in and take them with the rifle. I never try to get them to come to me, I go to them in rifle season and QUICKLY!!!

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-28-13 AT 02:11PM (MST)[p]New mexicos early rifle dates in its best units doesn't start every year till plus or minus oct.12th every year, and the bulls are still going crazy . Here in az october 1st would still be considered prime dates for calling. I killed 389 bull in az several years ago on october 2nd. Good luck to ya.

Always can cow talk and get responces and have them sneck in. Even on the late November elk hunt have had a couple years that they were very talkitive, even the bulls.

Bulls where I am in NM can be screaming midway thru Oct.,sometimes later.I rarely use a bugle, even during the full rut.Unless they are not bugling at all, maybe a locator bugle then.
But I always use cow calls, several different ones and mix it up.

I do it all the time and have good luck. Around here in wyoming at least what I notice is in September the bulls establish dominance. Determine who the best bull is and who will get the cows. The younger bulls will hit the cow call but not the big ones. most of the time.

Late September the bulls gather their cows. They respond to cow calls pretty good but wont go far from their other cows. Last year I bugled in mid October and a bull pushed his cows towards me like he wanted to push me out of the area.

But everyone gets different reactions in every state and every drainage. every year changes. With the wolves a lot of elk don't talk back don't much. But one day bulls will be screaming and the next is just dead.

I called in a bull in the Uintah's during the general bull elk hunt on opening morning. You never know what you may call in but, if your in a high pressure area you will more than likely call in other hunters.

Hunted Wyoming last year, killed my bull on October 4th the bulls were off and on by then, but the mornings they were bugling they were going nuts.

It really depends on the year and where you are at.In some of the northern states (Idaho, Montana, Colorado)the bulls will generally still be talking and chasing cows into the middle of October. The heat of the rut seems to be towards the end of September. But again, it depends on the year, weather, pressure etc. It never hurts to have a cow call on hand cause you just never know.
Good luck.

2nd estrous begins about 30 days after the first rut, less cows for the bulls to choose from and I usually get good results, I mimic the cow in heat call and move slowly like a cow searching for a bull, where I've called the bulls tend to sneak in to take a peek before making any noise, although 2 seasons ago I had 3 bulls with about 40 cows come through mini bugling for about 30 minutes before I killed one
