A young guy from PA on his first mule deer hunt will have a bad memory from it. The kid "21" has never even shot a white tail buck. So I took him on a big hike looking for a buck. We started at the Snow Survey Cabin by Laramie Peak and hiked NW back into a deep valley. There we found a group of doe with a young fork horn. He was so excited he missed the first 2 shots (150 yards at a 60 - 70 degree decline) on the third shot he made contact. The little buck ran behind some pine and the doe went back to feeding. We waited a few minutes and proceeded down the step bank to the deer. He did a great job in spotting it under a pine still alive. The deer stood up and he put the next shot right in the neck. It ran another 10 yards and dropped. We took a few pictures and I gave him some congrats. It was about 2:00 at this time so we had to get busy boning out the deer to pack it almost 2 miles back up the mountain to camp. We got back to camp about 6:00 the other guys were still out but happy to see he got his first buck when they returned. The meat and antlers were hung out by the camp to cool. On Wednesday I had missed a nice 4X4 in the morning. We deiced to go into town to get showers that afternoon. Upon return we found that some varmints of the 2-legged human species entered our camp and remove the young mans antlers. Leaving the bags of meat behind. What is the hunting world coming too, steal a little fork horn rack. Luckily I missed that 4X4 or they would have taken it as well. At least he will have pictures and the good memories from the trip. We guess that they are going to use the antlers to shot a doe at the end of their hunting trip. I hope they choke on a back strap.
