Does anyone have any info on the Navajo Res. in New Mexico? Anything would be greatly appreciated!
Pick your guide or outfitter carefully, couple of years ago we had the outfitter show us where to camp, said I'll be back tomorrow to show you around and we never say him again, luckily we went into a gas station and told a guy what had happened and within minutes 2 different Navajos volunteered to guide us for free, nice people.

There are some great bulls on the navajo but not a lot of them . The elk can be hard to find if you don't know the area I would get a guide . You could hunt the whole hunt and not even see an elk the Navajo is a huge area .
A guide is required on he navajo unless u are an indian or married to one. I know where lots of bulls are. I usually buy the special elk permit they offer. I shot a 390 bull there last year. Weve already seen several big bulls this year. Just nothing over 400 yet. My rifle hun t starts sept 1 and runs to oct 15 and again from jan 1 to feb 15. If u want a bull just contact jay with jays trophy hunts. U can contact the other guides and they are nice but u will be very disappointed. Jay is the. Only hardcore elk hunter on that rez. My tag is rez wide but the areas we are seeing the largest bulls are on general hunt units. Like i said, call jason hoyungwa. Hes not cheap but hes the elk god when it comes to the navajo. This year is much harder than last year. Early july had all the bulls hitting water. The monsoons hit and all the bulls have scattered and arent concentrated around the water. When that happens the hunting gets tough due to the low elk numbers. That rez is a very unkow Place for elk as people dont want to hunt it because it is extremely time and labor intensive to find every single elk u spot. Les just say it mirrors a vey difficult public lands hunt. Good luck
We hunted the Rez about 3 years ago and didn't need a guide, you're right about low elk numbers, we passed on a spike opening day, finally took a 6x6 , but it was a tough week of hunting, saw lots of deer, but of course no deer tag, we ended up making friends and hunting with 2 locals, Bill Thatcher and I forget the other fella's name, great bow hunt
