I'm in total disbelief right now. Colorado opening day bull on a tag that I almost turned in because I drew my Utah LE tag here. I worked out a deal with my buddy that I drew the colorado tag with to do half a week there in Colorado opening week and then go back at the end of the month after my Utah LE hunt was open.

I've got to get him to the taxidermist and will score him today.

I'm curious what do you guys think it will score?

Dan - I'm thinking about 375. I saw one from last year that hit 362 and this looks a lot bigger to me. Long distance practice pays off bigtime!

What a beautiful bull - congratulations!! I could see him going 370-375 with all that tine length. Amazing Colorado bull no matter what he scores!!

Awesome bull! he just might go 380, with that tine length all the way around, long beams, good width and mass...
Gonna be hard to beat that when you go back over to UT for your 2nd hunt! I suppose that is a good problem to have though :)

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

Not really sure what the score is but I doubt you could ever find a nicer trophy than that one - heck of a bull!!
Congrats on a wonderful trophy!

>What unit? Thats a very good
>bull for colorado

It was in the Rocky mountains unit :)

Taxi did a quick rough score on him at 375", I got the horns home and did my best attempt to get an accurate score and got him right at 370" I think the Taxidermist was being a little generous. He said if I scored it the Mossback way (SCI) he'd get an extra 4 inches.

I am super stoked, this was a public land DIY archery hunt.

GREAT answer! Was worried you might actually say what unit.

elk man, I wish I could follow you around and learn your skills!! You really know how that elk hunting works!!! Hats off to you! you deserve Your success!!!

That the answer I'm going to start to give it's true and won't mess up a unit. What unit do you have in utah?

Thanks Goldberg, The key to my success is luck, I found a lucky horseshoe about 8 miles back in last year, I'm pretty sure that is what did it for me :)

That one I will answer, I've got the Manti tag, No matter what happens there, this will always the best season ever for me!

HELL SAKES!

Hand the Manti Tag Back in!

No sense in Killing 2 Big Bulls in one year!:D!

Congrats on the great bull, I'd be ecstatic with that or anthing close. I'm headed up Friday, now I have extra inspiration.

Don't worry about messing up the unit, leave that to the TV guys and magazine publishers.

Congratulations! To get a bull like that in Colorado is like winning the lotto.
Definitely will probably be in the top five bulls or less taken in the state this year with any weapon.
You accomplished it with a bow and that makes it even more incredible.
It will be hard to beat that bull even with your Utah tag but you never know it may be the year for you.
Take that lucky horseshoe with you to Utah.
Best of luck,
Jerry

That thing is a dream bull for any serious hunter! He's just about perfect.

I tip my hat to you!!!!!!

Speaking of luck, I had a guy ask me why we were successful on our past elk hunts. I really thought about the answer long and hard. The honest answer is, I just hang around in the mountains until I get lucky. We hunt early, hunt late, stay all day, hike a little deeper, keep our eyes and ears open and stay ready to shoot straight when luck rolls our way.

Luck has a way of finding (and rewarding) the elk hunter if he hangs around long enough.

Good luck on your Manti hunt. May "luck" be with you!

Are you kidding me Elkmandan? Who cares what he scores? That bull is absolutely beautiful! Congrats on an awesome bull

Hey ElkManDan,

Congrats on the bull! I hope you tag out on the Manti! I gave you a ride on the back of my tailgate Friday night Ha Ha. Small world! Hopefully you guys can seal the deal this week. It's going to be hard to beat that Colorado bull though!

Very nice bull Elkman. So I figured the pictures of him would surface soon. I got to thank you though, I shot a bear off his carcass last Tuesday during muzzle loader season. I actually was up above on the ridgeline the day you shot him. You likely saw me glassing that Saturday morning on opening day, up above him. I bet when you saw him from across the basin and likely saw me, you were praying I wasn?t an archery hunter. :) I was scouting for ML season and you burst my bubble with that shot. We were chasing a few bucks for archery though up at the very top of the mountain, which turned out well. I was going to hike on down and say congrats, but with a bull that big, it wasn't my business to come bother you guys.....plus I didn't want to be on the hook for having to help hike meat out of there :) I turned my tag back right before the opening due to being in the construction business and all our vacation time was called off due to responding to the floods. I will have it next year for sure. You will have to let me know what mountain house flavor you ate while gutting him out?..I picked up your plastic moisture savor package :) Turns out that bear was living in the willows just about 50 yards to the West of where you shot that elk eating on the carcass. He had been eating off that carcass for about a week (and all the maggots). Anyways, congratulations. Definitely one of the better bulls that will come out of that unit this year. Don?t worry, when the 50 guys send me an email asking where it was, they will all get the same answer ?No Tell?um Ridge?. I will be in there next year and the many years to come.

WOW, small world, I actually didn't see you up there. I was just back up there on Tuesday and was shocked that there wasn't anything but a spine left of the carcass, the bear explains that. The mountain house packet must have fallen out of my buddys pack, that is what he had for lunch before we spotted that bull and made the trek after him.

I went back up there this time hiking over the mountain. I apparently missed grabbing my rangefinder in the dark when we were loading everything up after quartering him up. We had to dig through some snow but we were able to find it and it still works. I hadn't noticed it was missing until I went through all my gear and couldn't find it a couple days later while getting ready for my Utah archery hunt. I figured that was the only place that it could be.

Maybe we'll see you up on the mountain sometime, although we tend to avoid the muzzleloader week. It was definitely a day I'll never forget and it was awesome but It would have been good to talk with you that day, sounds like you know the area better than me and could have probably given me some advise on the best route to get the bull down off the mountain, that was the first time I went up there.

Good luck next year, there are undoubtably some bulls up there bigger than the one that I got. I might be up there next year too with my buddy that was there with me trying to repay my debt to him for all his help.
