I have spent the last two days hunting deer in open country, winds have been blowing 35 - 40 MPH . The number of deer found in places I'v found them while scouting is way down and the big bucks are no where to be found. I have not seen another hunter in the area , so I don't think they have been botherd.Any suggestions , where should I be looking? This is very open country , not a lot of cover and I still can't seem to find the deer. 45 MPH winds for the next two days!

Me and my Brother and a friend found one hell of a Buck last week up at the top of a steep canyon in 45+ mph winds, go figure.....Blew our hats right off lol!

PS. My bro missed him at 315 AARRGGHH!! He was bigger than my Buck on one side, and a mass of points and stuff on the other side :(

I agree with what Jeremy said.. Look where the wind isn't. I think that is where you will find them.

the best thing you can do for hunting and wildlife is to make sure you know how to make accurate shots under those conditions. I sat on a B/C buck one year for almost 5 hours due to wind and range. I did not know accuratly the distance, I estimated the wind, but did not know the ballistics for the bullet in 40mph wind at a distance of what turned out to be 300yards. At that distance, my bullet would have drifted around 20" with a 40 mph cross wind! I never took the shot and never got that deer but to this day I'm still proud that I did not decide to take a poor shot that could have wounded that deer.

You should know the ballistics, have a range finder, and kestrel wind meter if you think youre going to be shooting any distance in the wind. . .

I'm not being the shooting police, I'm only trying to help you to get ready for that kind of shooting because had I known on that day I was out, what the wind and distance did to my bullet I would have been comfortable and taken the shot. . .

Years ago a buddy of mine found a good quality buck for the area in a cave. Came around and over top of him. He was 20 yards straight above the buck. Buck blew out and he grazed him inside 50 yards on the run. Buck stopped over 400 yards away and he heart shot him. Lull between gusts. My hat blew of packing that buck and I wasn't about to chase it down hill in 40+ winds. Eastern Montana is like that. Gone back to camp during archery season because wind was blowing so hard I couldn't have made a 20 yard shot.

There is always a place in the hills that the wind isn't hitting as hard a creave or a small depression with trees and that is where they will be bedded down waiting out the wind.
