I read UThunting's story and it reminded me of something that happened to me a couple years back. I hear some shots and awhile later find a wounded deer bedded up. The guy who shot the deer is nowhere in sight so you put the deer out of its suffering and go get the guy who shot it and tell him where it is. Both of you walk up to it and he says ," thats not the deer I shot, it was much bigger than that and I'm not tagging a "little" buck.....because i didn't actually see him pull the trigger and i didn't know how to react to such audacity I tagged the buck.....WHAT WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO?

It was the only thing to do. You couldn't make him tag it and you wouldn't want to waste it. Even though it may not have been a deer that you would have shot for yourself if it wasn't wounded, you did good.

When you pull the trigger, you had better be ready to tag it if you can't find the original hunter. There may be special circumstances, but I wouldn't mess with the hunting laws........

PLEASE READ MY FIRST POST ON UThuntings THREAD!!!

Jeramy-

So after reading your story, one thing immediately came to my mind and i'll ask YOU this.

"Do you think it WAS that guys deer?
He shoots it, THEN see's how small it is and leaves it?"

You seem to be convinced it was his deer in reading your story.
That would sure be MY guess, but i guess we'll never know at this point.

I saw that happen in the Books & the Henry's back when they were 2 point or better. Guys would shoot BIG forkhorns and leave them.

You kiled the deer so you need to put a tag on him. It doesn't seem right but its the right thing to do.What if you had not found the guy, would you have left the deer to lay or done what you did?

like you said mossback, responsibly I killed the deer, with every intent to tag it if I coulndn't find the guy. On the other hand I didnt expect the out come.

I'm not certain about other states, but in Wyoming if you kill it, you tag it, legally speaking. In most cases if a warden sees you shoot it, it better have your tag on it, regardless of any previous shots from you or someone else. Not saying it's right or wrong, just the way the law reads.

I saw something like this a few years ago on the bow hunt. Another hunter hit a very nice 4 point buck too far back. Some of the guys I was hunting with called and asked if I'd seen it. I saw him right in front of me about the same time he saw me. He was leaning against a tree trying to keep his feet. He took off and headed down the hill right into another hunter. This hunter shot him again and put him down for good. It was a nice buck and he could have kept it. He asked me if it was mine and I told him now but the guys who shot it were just up the hill. I called my friends and they brought the other hunters down to us. They were very greatful for the help with the recovery. The guy who finnished the deer off was ready to tag it if they werent the right guys. But seeing that they had hit it first he let them have it.

I like being around other hunters who do the right thing.

Was hunting with a guy in Wy in 92 when we saw 3 bucks go over the top of a ridge. Smallish 4 point, great buck right @ 30" and a nice non-typical. As soon as they topped out we hustled to where we last saw them. We were surprised to find a open, sagebrush flat. We spread out about 60 yards apart and slowly started pushing the flat. The non-typical jumped up infront of him, angling away from me. He shot at about 40 yards and grazed the buck at the very top of his shoulder. When I looked at the buck through my scope, I could see a flap of hide flopping every bound. He was alot closer and had already drawn blood so I waited. After he missed his second shot, I made a pretty good Texas heart shot at about 150 yards. Buck went down and got back up, staggering. I put the crosshairs on his neck and waited. I heard the other guy yelling, so still looking through the scope, I yelled to see if he wanted me to finish it. The fool was yelling and running towards the buck. He ran right into the view of my scope. Scared the heII outta me. Anyways, although his shot wouldn't have had any lasting effects on buck,I never even brought up the fact that my shot killed him. He actually mentioned it to me when he got his mount back. No hard feelings about the buck but we never hunted together again because I don't trust someone gets so excited he throws safety and common sense out.
