LAST EDITED ON Oct-20-07 AT 07:07PM (MST)[p]Here is Mr. Triple K's first buck ever (I think he may have hit one with a car once though...lol). Hunting Utah during the General Season hunt is always interesting and today was no exception.

First of all...Kolby (that's Mr. TripleK's name...let's give him his own identity here...) He wasn't even really too enthused about going hunting, but I bought him a tag anyway and thrust my dad's gun, "Ol' Killer", his trusty .270, into his hands and said, "You're goin!". And that was that. It turned out that he had today only to hunt, so he decided he was going to shoot the first decent buck he saw since we weren't hunting for antlers anyway...just needed some meat in the freezer.

I dragged his butt out of bed at 4 am this morning, we rounded up our 9 year old son, K1 (the other boys also have K names...hence the TripleK name of mine...but K1 is our oldest and K2 and K3 stayed home with Grandma) and a friend, Dwayne, and we headed for the hills with my daddy (the best huntin' buddy ever!).

When we got to the place we wanted to hunt, it was just beginning to get light enough to shoot. We had timed it perfectly and we immediately saw a couple of bucks on a ridge about 100 yards away. I could clearly tell they were both bucks but as soon as we began to scope them out another hunter began walking toward them. WTF? So, we lowered our guns since we figured he had seen them first and was putting the stalk on them (a not very stealthy one, btw). We decided to watch for a minute before moving on, but this guy kept on walking...and he was moving quite quickly through there, too. I don't think he ever even saw the bucks though. He was below them, about 25 yards from them and didn't even stop or look in their direction. He just walked past them, walked in front of us then back toward the main road and got in a truck and drove away. It was a little odd, but we made sure he was gone and not going after those deer before making a stalk.

Kolby and K1 walked up the small ridge next to the one we had seen the bucks on and as soon as they got to the top, K1 spotted them and alerted his dad. Kolb got down in a crouch, got steady and let the lead fly. His first shot hit the buck in a leg but didn't bring him down. He moved about 5 yards but Kolby's second shot hit him right in the heart and his next move was to hit the dirt..dead, dead, dead. Carve another notch on Ol' Killer's stock! Mr. TripleK had his first buck...a tall antlered 3x4. He was quite pleased with himself and our "guides" were very excited.

Here he is with his trophy. (he really was excited about it and wants a gun now)

Gotta have the hunter and all the guides in the pics with the buck, right? lol

The guides had to help drag the buck to the truck too...and then pose with it...LOL

The other boy, Dwayne, is our new hunting buddy. His dad was an avid hunter and loved taking Dwayne, his only son, with him everywhere he went. His father, Tracy Houston, was killed in The Neola North fire in July alongside his own father George Houston. Dwayne barely escaped the fire himself. Tracy would've hunted the Wasatch LE elk unit this year with Dwayne by his side and I know we can't make up for any adventures he might have had with his dad, but I hope we can help carry on Tracy's love of hunting by taking his son with us each time we go (he's got quite few uncles who hunt as well...but it all helps). Dwayne was pretty excited to be in on this hunt too.

The buck is nice, but the story makes the record book. Great share.

Thanks for taking Dwayne out. With what he has experienced lately, what your doing is not only loving and admirable, but truly makes a difference in this "too crazy already" world that we live in.

Thanks for sharing.

WHOOO HOOO!! WAY TO GO KOLBY! GOOD JOB B-I-L! Nice buck - truly it is. And you have truly been let in to the "inner circle" if Al let you use "Old Killer", though if you would have used my .30-06 you wouldn't have needed the second shot!

Good job! It is good to see Dwayne with you too. You guys are awesome and I miss and love you all.

Congratulations on the buck! Thanks for taking youngsters hunting, they're the ones that are going to keep the traditions alive as we all get older. I love to see the big grins spread across their faces.

Congrats---Way to go!!!

Love the story

Went out this weekend with my 73 year old step-dad. Saw probably 120 deer on the first day with no bucks. Finally saw a bachelor group on Sunday and it was a little too demanding of a hike for my dad, so some other hunters that we knew sent one guy up and he missed one............. :(

Was fun just too watch another hunter try and take one.

I think my step-dad enjoyed it too. Cannot believe I got so excited about seeing a couple of "pisscutter 4x's", but sure was!!

Interesting thing to note, after last hunting deer in Utah back in the 80's, not that many hunters as I was expecting from my old recognition. Glad to see that as it gave my dad and I an opportunity.

Heard lots of shots on Sunday, that snow sure made 'em easier to see in the trees.

Expecting lots of deer to have been shot on Sunday. We probly got 9" inches were we were.

Hey! There ya go! Big congrats, loved the narative and pics! Now one for you? Look at the smiles on them boys, aint nothing better.

Awesome story and photos...thanks for sharing. Looks like they're all hooked for a while.

Yep...my turn now if I can get out there again. How redneck-mama will it look if I take all these screamin' kids with me out to kill a buck after school one day? lol

J/K...my dad's going to go with me a few nights this week then I'll go somewhere next weekend with him on the horses. Maybe I'll luck into Bobcat's Nomad. ;-)

Jenn

I'm impressed you let the hunter go for the stalk. I was stalking a deer earlier this year and it seems some hunters in a truck were watching me. When I was almost to the deer the doors opened and they went and took a long shot. I thought that was pretty lame. Congratulations on a dandy buck.

TEE-TEE-K!!!

IF THE Nomad LIVES???

HE'S A SMART SOB!!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

I HOPE YOU FIND HIM!!!

BY THE WAY!!!

YOU'VE RUINED THE OLE MAN!!!
