My dad picked my up at 5:30 Sunday morning to head out for a days worth of hunting. As we were leaving we noticed a jeep full of guys spotlighting the deer that hangout in the field across from my house. The deer were very frightened and some of them were jumping the fence out on to the highway. I asked my dad to pull down the dirt road they were on so we could check out what was going on and get their plate #. We pulled up next to them and rolled down the window and asked them if they had a firearm in the vehicle. They told us that they did not, and I informed them that I was going to call the local CO anyway. They sped off up the road to where they were camped and we started to leave. As we were leaving they came back up the road and started spotlighting again, so I called it in and gave the fish and game the info and their license plate #. They may have been doing nothing wrong, but it seemed a little fishy to me. What do you all think?

On a brighter note, I think karma was on our side, because I was able to put my pops on a good buck, which he was able to harvest. It was the largest deer he has ever taken, and it will probably be his last hunt, I am super stoked!!

Shummy, there is a distinct possibility that you may be right! Maybe they went to camp to put thier firearm back in the tent and then went back to spotlighting?!
Congrats on the buck, lets see some pics. fatrooster.

Shummy,
Fatrooster is right. You did the right thing. If they are legite then the warden will find that out. If not then the warden will find that out also.

I would've had called them in too.

My dad found a buck on the side of the road yesterday...all gutted out, throat slit..etc....just dumped out. Magpies were all over it. Total waste. Don't know what the story is on it, but maybe the F&G will find out. It never hurts to call in anything suspcious.

I would have called them in, but I wouldn't have given them the luxury of knowing the warden was on his way. Would have set the warden up for a "surprise attack"

TripleK,

That buck your dad found, wouldnt have been out near the indian grounds, on your way to White Rocks, would it??? I found a buck on the side of the road, convered in magpies, throat slit, and gutted out. I noticed it on Friday morning, but didnt stop to check it out until last night. ONe of the guys we hunted with was going to call F&G today about it. Oh, it was a decent looking 2x3.

TUFF

That'd be the one. Near the Fish Hatchery. You saw it FRIDAY? Wow. My dad called it in last night, then saw a C.O. on the mountain who checked his license and he told her about it. When he went back by it was gone.

Yeah, they were probably going to do something illegal. Your lucky they didn't kick your a$$ though. You really don't have the authority to ask them if they have a gun or anything for that matter. Report them....yes.

Your damn right you did the right thing shummy, and good on you!!

You would have lost many nights of sleep wondering had you not called, it would have eaten you up inside always wondering.

And congratulations on your dad's buck....pictures???

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-07 AT 10:02AM (MST)[p]I'm not too worried about anyone kicking my ass, I'm a fairly big boy. My asking them that may very well have prevented a crime, If you go through life scared of confrontation, or afraid to stick up for what is right, then you might as well just stay in your moms basement and never venture outside.

I really need to invest in a digital camera, the only pictures that I have are 35mm. It was great to see how happy my dad was. He's getting on in years and isn't very mobile anymore, so anytime with him is valued.

90% of whats wrong with america is people dont mind their own business. Everything has a way of coming back around. If your doing something you shouldnt you will pay the price sooner or later.

You guys can use it like you thought it up if you want.

True.....until you get shot or stabbed. I had a buddy like you once. He caught some guy breaking into his car when we were in college and went over to whip his a$$. The guy stabbed him and he died.

Don't know about you, but a deer isn't worth any person's life.

IMHO, the single biggest threat to the future of hunting is hunters allowing questionable activities to happen with little concern and by staying silent. To be silent makes it appear as though you condone it. Stand up and defend hunting or you will lose hunting all together. Shummy did the right thing! Glad your dad got to enjoy the hunt.

You do what ever makes you feel good... Whatever someone else is doing is none of my business unless it directly affects me or the well being of someone else. I wouldnt just stand there and let some lowlife beat his kids or wife or watch someone assult you. Its simple if they were doing something wrong they have done it before and it will catch up to them. Lets not blow this all out of porportion. Its simple mind your own.

I guess i'm just different than a few of you. I stand up for my rights and beliefs. I'm willing to die for my convictions. Do as you will, and like PRO pointed out, don't be suprised if your rights disappear.

I dont condone poaching But your right i should contribute more to the organizations that help preserve the future.

I think you have it all wrong buddy. The problem with most people is they figure as long as it is not affecting them at that moment they don't need to be concerned. People should watch out for others who are not following the rules and protect the resources. Nobody is above the law and the warden can't be everywhere.

Triplek-
I guess we can figure out THAT story pretty easy!

Ummmm, my guess is someone found a bigger buck and tossed the one they already had???

Yes - it is important to mind your own business. But, if I see someone committing a suspicious or illegal act on my own land or in private land - guess what - it is my business! Shummy you did the right thing by calling it in and by speaking out. You need to be cautious but prepared. Sounds like you handled it right, but every situation is different and yes there are some crazy people out there who would just as soon poach you as they would a deer so you must be careful.

First of all... im not your buddy.
Second I have it right. You only no one side of this so called story and thats the side you believe. He had no right to ask them if they had a firearm and by doing so He was just asking for trouble. Hes probably lucky it wasnt someone else.

Deer were running ( which is what they do when they see cars or people ) so a truck load of guys must be doing something wrong Deputy Dog is on the case.

I guess you guys are part of the 90%

Anytime there is someone spotlighting during ANY hunting season, it should be checked out and reported. To assume nothing wrong was going on is nonsensical. To imlpy that shummy was out of line for being a "SPORTSMAN" is absurd! If you choose to do NOTHING, you get what YOU deserve.

PRO

He had no right to ask them a question? Since when is that against any sort of rights??? Were you one of the guys in doing the spotlighting?? If there were more guys like Shummy out there, people would think twice before doing stuff like that.

>
> Deputy Dog is on

Personally, I'd rather be a Deputy Dog.

If everyone knows that all of Deputy Dogs are on the case out there, maybe those about to engage in an illegal act will think twice, because I'm not going to think twice about calling something suspicious in.

I don't think anybody is questioning his intentions. It's obvious that they were good. As far as confronting them, well that probably wasn't his place. As it turned out things seemed to work out fine. Law enforcement is better left up to people who get paid for it. Personally I would have made my presence known and reported it, but not confronted them. I've never been one to back down from confrontation, but i'm old enough and hopefully wise enough to stay out of those situations. There are people who will shoot you for less than that and i'm not willing to risk leaving my kids for a deer. And, i'm sorry but it doesn't matter how big you are....if there were a bunch of them you wouldn't stand a chance.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-07 AT 01:36PM (MST)[p]Maybe poaching was not on their agenda yesterday, but they were cetainly chasing deer across highway 18, which could cause injury to property or death from a vehicular collision. Anyway you want to look at it I feel I did the right thing, and I think a few of you are being ridiculous. I am glad I don't live my life in fear of being shot or stabbed. It would make for a pretty shallow existence. It would also serve as a poor example to my sons if we had walked away.

Shummy,
I've got 3 brothers that are cops and they are always lecturing me on staying out of the spotlight. "Don't get involved", "stay anonimous". My answer to them is how can you live a life so full of paranoi. Maybe they are right, but a life lived where your always "hiding" is no life at all.
All I got to say is good for you.

No I wasnt doing any spotlighting. What are you trying to say?

Spotlighting at 530 in AM? Give me a break. Isnt it almost light?

Now your worried a deer might be in the highway and get hit by a car passing by?

This is a waste of time. If you feel good about taking what other people do and making it your business Keep on keeping on.

Kinda funny how every one gets so pissed off.

Been trying to teach my 5 year old not to rat out my 3 year old. Lessons that might never be learned I guess.

Just remember things are not always how you precieve them.

I think ropinfool has a good point, but it may have came out too harsh at the beginning and nows he seems to be upset over this.

Confronting someone IS dangerous, you just never know who might pull the trigger on you over something no matter how big or small of an issue it may be.

But on the other hand, it's good that there is people out there like shummy that will call people out on the carpet DURING an act. That's all fine & dandy, but he's taking a huge risk?but that's a risk HE feels good about taking and it's not right for anyone else to critisize him for doing so.

I say good on you shummy, thanks for putting your life on the line for something you believe in.

LOL sorry. Came across a little harsh. I don't agree with my brothers on this, but I'd give my life for them and they would for me.

I believe calling them in was the right thing to do, however no one has the authority to pull them over and question what they are doing and ask if they have guns with them except law enforcemnt. Acutally, it probably isn't a very smart thing to do either

LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-07 AT 02:52PM (MST)[p]LAST EDITED ON Oct-22-07 AT 02:50?PM (MST)

I haven't heard from the CO as of yet. When I talked to him Sunday morning, he was very glad to hear from me, and said he would be right there. He's a local and doesn't live too far away. All this happened within 50 feet of houses. The roads aren't paved where I live, it's just a little mountain town, some of us even had people try and set up camp in our back yards.

No one was "pulled over" we simply pulled up to them and asked what they were doing. Read the story, it's the one at the top of the page.

"That's all fine & dandy, but he's taking a huge risk?but that's a risk HE feels good about taking and it's not right for anyone else to critisize him for doing so."

True, but he did ask what we think.

Yep, he sure did and he got it from both sides.

There is no right or wrong here.
There's no law that says he can't ask if someone has a gun, whether it's his job or not.

He simply wanted to know what they were up too before he placed blame and called the police.

The way he went about it is his business and lies on his shoulders no matter the outcome.

Personally i wouldn't have confronted them, i'd have just called the police and let it be in their hands. A poached deer is not worth MY life!

But shummy did what he felt was right and something that he felt he needed to do.
That's that....good on him.

Yeah, we first saw it around 9:00 am Friday. It was still there on our way out on Sunday, around noon. There was a 12 pack of beer bottles dumped right next to it!

It looked like it was a pretty fresh, maybe on a few days old. Im guessing it was killed someone in the middle of the week.

Oh, I read the story. The one where you tried to play Mr. Game Warden. I don't think it is the smartest thing to do to question someone you think is breaking the law...with rifles..in the dark...out in the country.

As I said, if you thought something funny was going on it was the right thing to do to call it in, but you have no authority to question them and ask about weapons. Read my response, it is right above yours.

I think some people are a little confused about rights and authority. Our first constitionally ammended right is the freedom of speech, so you can actually ask any adult any question you want, weather it be innapropriate, perverted, socialy unacceptable or whatever. You can't threaten them, but that's about it really. Now, they can respond however they want. Just because Shummy asked them if they have weapons doesn't mean they have to tell him the truth. But you can't say he doesn't have the "right" or "authority" because that has nothing to do with it. Now, if Shummy has a big gold star on his chest and asks the same question about weapons and they lie to him and he finds out, then they've just broken the law by obstructing justice, but that's another issue altogether.

I say good on ya Shummy and of course they were up to no good.

I personally believe in minding my own business too. If I suspect someone of poaching my wildlife, that makes it my business. I wouldn't confront them, but would get the license plate number and phone it in. You did good Shummy! Congrats to your dad!

He had every right to ask. The others didn't have to answer him. That is thier right.
