My fourteen year old nephew, Joey Penovich took this nice 5x5 bull opening morning of the Utah Youth Elk Hunt.

Opening morning our group including; my brother Joe, nephews Joey and Jordan, husband Justin and myself made our way to the top of the mountain with the intention to catch the elk before they bed. We would stop every so often to cow call with hopes of some response. We heard some activity off in the distance, so we decided to find a good spot to hold up and keep on calling. At first it sounded like the bulls were getting closer and then after about forty-five minutes or so the bugles sounded faint. We decided to make a move by closing the gap between us and them. My brother and Joey were just a few yards ahead of the rest of us when we heard a close bugle. Justin could see the bull about 200 yards coming straight for us. We dropped to the ground while Justin kept on calling him in. He was herding a group of six cows, but obviously wanted more! Justin did a fantastic job cow calling and got him within fifty yards for Joey to make the shot. The bull dropped in his tracks!! Unfortunately, we were not able to get it on camera. My brother put the video camera back in his pocket and was too caught up in the moment to realize it.

My brother is a lucky guy to have both of his boys with the same passion for the outdoors and he has! They both dove right in to help skin and bone him out, even during a downpour of rain and hail. They also refused to be left out of the pack. It was truly a moment which I will cherish! I want to thank my nephew for the invite and congratulate him on bagging his first bull elk! I hope to have many more adventures together in the future!

Very cool. Congrats to him. The family youth hunts are always fun and even better with success. Hope next weekend works for my boy. We had 18-20 bulls talking to us last weekend, so this weekend sould be a bit better.

Congrats again.

Hunts with the family and friends are special. Nice job young man. Hope you have more hunt just like this last one.
