Hoping whoever shot and wounded a bull in Horse canyon in the last couple of days gets on here and sees this.
Great tracking job! That bull left a blood trail a blind man could follow, looked like you got one lung but I never did see where you even made an effort to find him. Hope you get one to go right down the next one you shoot so you don't wound to many more!

Did you end up finding the bull dead? Maybe you should contact the DWR. That's ridiculous they just left it there. Hopefully they are coming back for it.

WHAT?!?!? A rifle hunter wounded an animal? Don't tell Bobcatbess - oh wait, he is already on the case. :)

In all seriousness-that sucks that someone would shoot a bull and not put any effort into finding the animal. Make sure you report the animal to the DWR as it could have been poached as well.

Wow, Sucks to hear. Cant believe a rifle hunter would not follow up on their shots.

I know of 2 bulls shot and lost on the Book cliffs both gut shot and not followed. One was a huge herd bull. They luckily... ended up shooting 2 more bulls later that day.

Also a nighbor went with his buddies down to the fishlake with 2 buddies. They pot shot a herd of elk and according to him "clearly" hit 2 of the bulls. Since they did not drop, the guys would not go look for them cause they have bad knees and it was over 400 yards across a steep canyon. They also shot other bulls overe the weekend that they did recover.

Seems like the epidemic spans all weapon types.

turn them in and get a tag for that area from DWR.

Elkhunter2428,

I have been searching high and low for a bull that I shot on the archery hunt last Thursday. I have been all over the mountain. I shot him on a hard quartering away shot last Thursday evening about 740pm. The arrow entered on the right side, just behind back rib and exited left front shoulder. I saw good blood and heard him wheezing. When By the time all calmed down it was dark and I decided to be safe to come back in the morning. When I got back to the spot I found blood and all was good. Unfortunately though, the heavens opened up and it washed out the blood trail and tracks. I have called the DWR and spent four days on the mountain looking for him. If you have information that could lead me to my bull I would be beyond grateful. He may have traveled farther than I thought and the radius of my search has been to small. Your information would be appreciated, I have been sick. My four year old son and I hiked out to the point and called him into five yards. It was an experience that all fathers dream about with their sons. If this is the same bull I will be forever in your debt!

Thanks!

PS. Please PM me.

I can guarantee that rifle hunters take far more unethical shots than any other type of hunter. Bessy's points are valid in many cases however there are at least 20 rifle hunters to every one archery hunter. Its a complete numbers game..you have just as many jack azz's taking the wrong shot in either case. I hunt every weapon available and have seen far more dumbshit pot shooting rifle hunters than anything else. I hope Banaonthefly retrieves his bull.

Just the other day we were up on the wastach scouting for my uncles muzzy elk tag when we heard a shot go off real close to us. so we decided to walk up the ridge line to find the hunter. We walked up on him as soon as he fired up the wheeler. I asked him if he needed help packing one out cause he was by him self. He answered no I missed him. When I asked him how come he said he was really far away and point at the oppisite ridge line and said he was running up the ridge line and when he crested the top I decided to shoot at him. He then continued to say how he thought it was about 700 yards ( more like 1000). I then made a smart azz commit bout how well he must have searched well for blood and he just laughed. Then I preceeded to tell him if the bull was on that ridge he was on private property. This is when he started back peddling. Needless to say I dont think rifle hunters are saints by any stretch of the imagination. I know it goes both ways but I get tired of hearing the one side non sense.

Yes, I agree some bow hunters are just bow shooters that shoot arrows at animals to far away but at least they are close enough to walk over and look for blood.Like some of you have said ,when your long range banging its pretty hard to walk across a canyon or go to the bottom of a hell hole just to look for blood.
I don't have a problem with guys shooting long range but these aint paper targets people, they are living, breathing, pain feeling animals and if we are going to hunt them we owe them a quick death not three or four days bleeding out before that finaly kills them.

I am sorry to hear about these wounded/dead elk.

On a bigger note. Where is the Basin ethics police? This post has been up for 2 Days and no response from the "Big Guy" herself, it must not be true if there has been nothing said.

Its only "stickflippers" that do that, yet I know of just as many wounded bulls with rifles this year as bows there has been no warnings from the Basin.

C5mrr270,

That was funny!
