anyone harass'd at the California yermo checking station?

these guys are really full of themselves!

BAFOONS IN PICKLE SUITS!

Well, ok!

They climb all over your rig as if you were a drug smuggler; ?THEY? count shoulders, hams, and check licenses and tags. Isn?t this Utah?s job?

They claim it's for CWD? and yet the ?CALIFORNIA? DFG takes over and make demands on game take'n legally in ANOTHER STATE!

One ole boy had left the head of his buck with a Utah taxidermy shop, and they DEMANED TO SEE THE receipt!

I mean if a Utah DFG was present it would make sense of them to ask, but califonia! To me? it's like speeding in Arizona and than getting a ticket in California...

Myself I had no problems, I know what morons these guys are? they pull this crap every year we return from a OUT OF STATE hunt?. Go figure

Did you bring back an animal whole (not de-boned)?????

I am heading out to Colorado next week. In years past people had got used to skirting the check station in Truckee. I assume the new station out by Boca is up and running?

I know Kali has tried to scare hunters into not returning with heads, backbones, and skulls, was this the case at the check station or was it simply a check? Did you have to fill out any paperwork?

Here is the "code"

California Code of Regulations
Title 14, section 712. Restriction of Importation of Hunter-Harvested Deer and Elk Carcasses.

No hunter harvested deer or elk (cervid) carcass or parts of cervid carcass shall be imported into the State, except for the following body parts:
(a) boned-out meat and commercially processed cuts of meat.
(b) portions of meat with no part of the spinal column or head attached.
(c) hides with no heads attached.
(d) clean skull plates (no meat or tissue attached) with antlers attached.
(e) antlers with no meat or tissue attached.
(f) finished taxidermy heads.
(g) upper canine teeth (buglers, whistlers, ivories).

I talked to my butcher and he says he is still accepting out of state animals. I have always brought back skinned deer (headless), and bull quarters. Am I going to get pinched if it is not bone out? are they asking questions regarding importation.

The DFG website states that this is a "strict code" http://www.dfg.ca.gov/regulations/07-08-mammal-regs.pdf
(page 3, "CWD")
?No Skull, No Backbone?
When returning home with
deer and elk harvested out of state,
hunters must follow California?s
strict regulations to avoid bringing
CWD into our state. The California
regulations can be summarized
in one phrase: ?No skull, no
backbone.?

Here si a press release from 2006. It talks about fines and jail time.

Any thoughts?????

Well it's Kalifornia after all. Would we expect anything else?
Just spent 2 weeks in Wyoming and Idaho. Went through a check station in each state. Very polite and courteous fish and game people at both check stations. My brother had killed a buck in Wyoming and we were given a 15 minute talk on CWD. Was very informative. They also wanted to know if we were satisfied with our hunt and if the deer numbers were good and if we thought there was too many hunters. I always think there is too many hunters.

Really....

THIS IS A TICKET WRITING BONANZA.... for Kalifornia DFG....

every year... it gets worse! soon..... YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO IMPORT A ANIMAL FOR ANOTHER STATE.... AT ALL....

just go back a few years... see the changes? Kalifornia is losing money to other states! this is a way to make it up!

next year...

i'm going to leave my deer in the locker... IN UTAH....

I'll return in a few weeks later, collect the deer in my "regular" car... and drive right pass them.... screw these kALIFORNIA DFG COACHROACHES

Has anyone brought back a buck or bull without removing the spine, head, toe nails, ear wax, boogers?

Seriously, Has anyone been hassled at the check station with a full size critter?

I like my butcher and don't want to "part out" my animal for no other reason that it's a helluva lot easier bringing them back whole.

You must have had a guilty look on your face...was through there 2 weeks ago and they could have cared less what we had, gave us the ca dfg form to fill out and didn't even want their copy, said just mail it in later. Yeah right.

I am not sure if MAC was complaining about being molested by the DFG or just being inconvenienced by the new regs. CWD is a very serious problem and to prevent the spread of it, serious measures (regulations) need to be put into place. It seems the same people skirt the system are going to be the first ones to point the finger, whine and cry after this disease has spread and decimated our big game animals.

D13'er

me...? no ! i was expecting this, i just noticed how they HIJACK just about every body.... even about out of state tags!

i just really felt that this time.... the checking stations were man'd by wanna be army recon, cops, or justice dept freaks! sad to come HOME to california

MS?

NO! It's about their approach, I found them to be very adversarial, Hunters coming home are tired, and have a sense of a very good trip has ended? just to run into the YERMO gang...

I haven't hunt?n in California since 81?, still I don't want CWD in California?. And really? How do we know it isn't here already? Really? I cant remember the last time a dead deer I brought home?? was eat?n by another deer! It just doesn't happen

BTW... I USE to hunt d13, for many years..

I mostly agree with you on this one. I think Mac's point was that they were jerks. F&G should meet the hunters half way on this and all other issues as far as being on the same team. CWD is a protein based disease that will decimate a cervid population unless kept out of the local.

I went thru yesterday. They seemed ok, not NAZIs but a little aggresive. My dad got a nice buck that we had completly boned out and in the cooler. They gave the cooler a complete checkout. We did get a warning because there was still hair on the skullcap. I guess that's not allowed either. They did have a table and cleaning supplies setup so we could clean the skull. One guy came thru with a whole deer, skin and all, and they sent him back to a butcher in Vegas.

HEY Mac,

I know what you mean about the wannabe's, I think we all have delt with wannabe / overbearing rent-a-cops & cops etc. The fact is, this is a very very serious issue and because of your ignorance (for lack of a better term) about this disease, they need to do their job and trying to skirt the system is like someone trying to shoot an animal out of season or ignoring antler restrictions. I dont know how this disease is spread, I leave it upto the experts, we may not be happy about it but, we have to respect the regulations set .i.e. season dates, harvest limits etc. Just because you dont hunt cali anymore, have some respect for those who do. BTW I take it you got a ticket? If in fact they did ticket you, I hope you told them how you felt about their tudes!

Peace out!

Well....now you gone and hit a nerve. My family has been in California since 1840. I like it here. I like to hunt here. I like the healthy deer herds we have here. I challenge anyone in the West to show me more open public, unfenced, huntable land. Only a complete idiot would live somewhere that they didn't like.

Think about how many Californians these DFG people meet at those check stations......10,000 whiners, sniveling about the CWD rules.

Think about why all the other states hate California hunters. Pushy, whiners and snivelers; most with attitudes about how bad the "natives" treat them in other states.

Think about how many California hunters fail to follow the simplest regulations.....or try to beat them on purpose.

Think about the possibility that you might contribute to the spread of CWD. That is a real problem and it has nothing to do with money...airhead!

Think about the fact that most of these people that man those "bug stations" make crap for wages.

Think about the possibility that you may have had a chip on your shoulder when you pulled up to the station.

Add all these things up and multiply them by 10,000.....reality check?

Clearly, if you don't like the rules here ...leave. That would be the intelligent thing to do. And if you are a tourist and don't like the rules here, go somewhere else on your vacation.

Sorry, I lost my head....

Nickman,
You are high on crack. The deer herds in CA? There are no "herds" anymore. Just a couple skinny does running around. I too have lived here for 30 years, and there has never been fewer deer in cali. Also, the check station guys that I have met before are always pushy, and mostly rude. They are like the Dirty Harry of bug checkers. I am always curtious and really never have anything to worry about since my animals are always completely boned out. Somehow though, the bug checker always manages to make me feel like I just murdered someone.

..........well, at least we now know how informed you are there Buck. .....how's your personal crack supply holding up?

Don,
clearly you have lost touch with reality to think California's deer herds are doing well. Being from Bishop, I can see how you would be. Obviously you have never ventured out to the rest of California. I would also venture to guess that you probably know or are related to someone in a pickle suit.

Have fun.

well we just came through today,,, we had 2 nice lil fat bucks, we quarter them out and remove the "icky's" as per regs and have the paperwork filled out, just in case we're checked,,,,, but we always put the ice chests and horns in the trailer,,,, and when we are asked the where u folks coming from question we just answer "vegas" and they let you right through,,, but i guess i'm kinda in to flying in under the radar ,,,,,u get asked anything just tell em your coming from vegas ,,,, to each his own though

What if your rig is covered in MUD and blood down the back of tailgate?? Be carefull, it might come back and bite you somewhere that won't be nice.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-26-07 AT 11:15PM (MST)[p]Buck, I guess at this point, my only answer would be, that what you don't know won't affect my draw odds anywhere in Eastern California.

And just for the sake of clarity, yes, I know a boatload of DFG people....98% of whom I consider seriously deficient in; biological knowledge, basic people skills, local wildlife issues and outdoor recreational practices. I avoid them as much as posssible. Not difficult, since they never leave the office.

All the good ones are retired or dead.

Also, for clarity, the guys in the "bug stations" are Agricultural Dept employees. And I never said I liked them either, I just said they had a crappy job; made worse by guys like you and your pleasant attitude.

You have insulted me in 2 consecutive posts, without knowing me, or anything about me.

"Wish you were here".

brian, if u were refering to my post i think maybe u might of misunderstood what i was trying to say, we DO all the REQUIRED paperwork AND clean up our pickup , so we're not TRYING to sneak through if thats what it sounded like, what i meant more than anything else was WHY even bother with screwing with those people unless u absoulutly have to? and if you do just have all your i's dotted and your t's crossed and your good to go, some of the people running these check points are perfectly fine, polite, and just plain nice, and some are terrible, once years ago we stopped at the voulentary (spelling?) check station coming back across from utah to arizona, you werent required to stop but we did, was a lady that said to us that ALL hunting is wrong and it should ALL be outlawed,,, i asked then why in the hec r you here? she said was none of my bizz LOL she was a real peach,,,, again whatever works ,,,, i'm ready for some fresh liver :)

Wasn't trying to be smart, just a few things I have noticed over the years of hunting out of state. I'm like you and a lot of others, clean the rigs up before coming back home, don't look like a bunch of "mud dobbers" as we call them out here, just run through the mud and cover the PU and come home.
Heck, one time I was coming home from somewhere during the winter months and was stopped at the "old Truckee" check station and half asleep from driving all night, it was about 2AM.
Inspector asked where I was coming from and half asleep said Sparks and he said thanks, but I was coming from Colorado.
Never been given a hard time by any over the years, most of them won't even come out of their warm huts during the winter.
