Actually, hold them down and D13er will score them. He's an OM for B&C.

Dead on the ground. Woops you said live. How about the old pop them if you think you can't go home without them rule.

I prefer the hunt and release method that I learned while fishing on the Green River. I just shoot them and then if they are not big enough, I just rub their bellies a little bit and head them up stream, pretty soon they just take off!! No harm done. They almost always swim down stream though. It is kid of hard too, especially when I hunt in the desert. That 4 hr ride in the back of the truck to get to the river kind of gets them a little stiff, and sometimes their stomachs get fat and the flies really bother them. But, when I get them in the water, they perk right up and follow the current downstream. Man - them deer can really swim good underwater! They never come up for air! There is usually plenty of time to score them before that though.

In all seriousness though, the easiest way is to practice a lot before going in the field. You need to look at a lot of different bucks, big, medium, and little and see what they score. Once you get an idea of what bucks actually score, you can then comparatively score them through intuition and experience. You can also check out the B&C website that shows you how to score them and then you can get an idea of the features that produce good scores and look for those in the buck you are hunting.

Do all that, then go out and shoot the first little tiny buck you can see.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-25-07 AT 10:30PM (MST)[p]Better yet, a rear naked choke hold and eelgrass and D13 can score it for you. LOL Now which one is going to be naked, no one wants to see.

Follow what you were told above and go to B&C site and study them good, some good books out there to get you throught the winter months along with videos.

This is way off topic but the fishing reference made me laugh. Maybe it is just because I'm from Vegas where most people have forgotten that people still hunt, but do you guys ever have people ask you if you "caught" anything? Maybe that just bugs me.

RE: How do I score live Mule deer?

Roy; I'm 40 years old and I just pissed my pants that was great! And for the guy from Vegas I love that also "Were did u catch that? and when they see a mount were is the rest of the body?" One time a told a guy that my elk wouldn't fit in the one room so I cut a hole in the wall and stuck his head out into this room and the body is in the other room and I have a hammock strectched between his front and back legs U should of seen his face!!!! PRICELESS

Use the same method most everyone else does...WAG...wild ass guess.

Get a book and practice.

Or...see what some of the more experienced guys estimate, then add or subtract a few inches.

RE: How do I score live Mule deer?

OK, I'll step up and actually answer your question.

First, know how bucks are scored by B&C. I know people who will throw numbers around on bucks but don't actually know what measurements are taken.

Next, start looking bucks over. In the field is good, but unless you're on good winter range, it's hard to view alot of trophy-sized deer on the hoof. The next best thing is mounted deer. Go around to sporting goods stores. The employees sometimes think I'm a little strange; I'll stare at a mounted buck for twenty minutes sometimes, viewing them from different angles and so forth. Two measurements I look for is 1) ear width. Most mature bucks have ears from 18-22" wide, tip to tip. When you see a buck in the field, try to figure out how wide his ears are. From there, you can figure out his inside/outside spread. If it looks like a young buck, think closer to 18" on the ear width. An older buck with a wider forehead will be closer to 22, but that doesn't hold true in all cases. 2) Next, I look for the distance from the eye to the tip of the buck's nose when viewed from the side. I don't hear about this measurement as much from other hunters, but it works well when you have to make a snap judgement in the field. This measurement too can vary greatly, but just figure if a buck has forks as deep as his eye-to-nose measurement, he's a decent buck.

If your're looking for good B&C score, don't get too wrapped up in width. Tine length matters more, infact David Long states that most record book typicals have an outside spread less than the magical 30 inch mark.
