BCBOYJr's 1st Muley Buck

This morning, my 11 year old son, Cody, and I decided to hunt an area we saw a 4 point yesterday evening. We hunted a deactivated road through a nice cable block and then still-hunted some beautiful fir ridges. After about an hour of hiking, we ran into this 4x3. Cody made a great shot with his late maternal grandfather's 30-30 and took out shoulders and lungs. We've had an amazing season, this spring he killed his first bear, a 6'4" monster, then in Sept he killed his first deer, a whitetail doe. For muleys, he's passed on many little bucks as we pursued the big boys. Had a few encounters with some monsters with some intense stalks, but they were able to slip away. With the any buck season nearing to an end, Cody decided 'any buck' would now do. I deboned the buck and backpacked him the km and half or so back to the truck. Needless to say I am one proud dad. If I don't get a buck myself, this will still be my best hunting season ever. Next week, Cody's muley doe draw starts, so hopefully he'll get his 3rd deer of the year come next weekend.

Cool, cool, cool!!! 2 more years and my boy will be hunting bucks. Sounds like you've both had lots of fun BC.

The rich tradition continues :)

Why such a tiny backpack ? Kind of looks like Jr. might of jumped inside for the ride down :)

Great buck and great photos Steve! Congrats to your boy on an excellent first buck! Does it ever stop raining up there?

Congratulations Cody! That's a lot better buck than my first one. You're well on your way young man.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-07 AT 05:22PM (MST)[p]That's a freaking big bodied deer! Way to go Cody! His antlers look kind of whiteyish - could he be a hybrid? - or just a bad gene pool? Either way - good job!

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. Cody appreciates them.

Browtine,
This year has to be the wettest year I've ever seen!!! I think I've gone through 4 pairs of raingear thus far. I think I'm starting to grow gills. :) The only positives are that antler growth is tremendous and the high country has been getting pounded by snow which will set up the late season just perfect. The past 2 months have been all about Cody. We've hunted hard every weekend since Sept 1. He should get his doe out of the way next weekend and then the last month of the season will be mine. With no MnT as a target, I don't know what to hold out for. It'll have to be a tremendous character buck or an absolute Giant before I pull the trigger. I have half a moose, Cody's 2 deer and my goat in the freezer, so there is a good chance I'll eat tag soup come last light on Dec 10th. I'll hunt er hard and see what comes. Regardless on what happens this last month, I've had the best season ever. I already can't wait for next year, as my daughter will be old enough to hunt too.

Roy,
No whitey genes in that buck, just a big bodied 2 year old is all. The pack was fairly heavy. Never did weigh it, but it sure felt all of 85 lbs or so. All the meat was deboned. So yea, he was a healthy pig.
