Utah Spike Muzzleloader

This was my first year using a muzzleloader for deer, and I had a great time and killed a nice buck. I am contemplating buying one of the general spike muzzleloader permits, but unsure whether it would be worth my time.

I have only hunted elk with a bow, and have limited knowledge of hunting elk post rut. Has anyone ever been out on the general muzzleloader spike hunt? Will it be next to impossible to find a spike after they have been chased for more than two months? Any thoughts or experience are appreciated. I haven't even decided which unit I would choose to hunt, I'm just itching to be out hunting again.

Let me just tell you this my friend, if you do buy that tag, you will not find any elk on the Wasatch. I am telling you the complete truth here. I have never seen anything so bad in all my days of being out on the mountain. The fish and lame have completely destroyed that unit. It is just as bad as what the fools did to the Fish Lake unit 6 years ago. They have come real close to exterminating every damned cow on the Wasatch!

I heard that 10% of the hunters kill 90% of the game.......I guess you just tipped your hand on which percentage you are in!

The reality is that they are over-harvesting the Wasatch but also that there are TONS of elk on the unit... if you're hunting where the elk are!

Spike hunting is tough, hard work but very do-able given enough time. Spikes are the smallest segment of the population and a guy needs to wade through lots of elk just to see one. It takes a bunch of time but we manage to do just fine.

I see the guys come and go and they usually spend a half day in the field hunting, a half day driving the roads (because they're tired and don't want to kill an elk) and a half day breaking down camp...and then they're gone. All this happens while we're either hunting or packing elk parts out of the backcountry. You can't hunt for a half day and then biotch about how poor the hunting is.

Buy a tag, go hunt and have fun! If you do that for 5-7 days/yr for 2 years you'll kill a spike with the frontstuffer....and have a ton of fun doing it!
