Ran across an old (1982) Outdoor Life article about him. I anybody remember him? I don't remember much, but the article said he had a book out about some of his mule deer. I checked ebay and amazon, but no used copies. What is the story behind him?

---------------------------------------
This is my post

I've just pissed in my pants.......and nobody can do anything about it.

I have his book. It was pretty good, but last I heard he got busted for illegal activity in regards to wildlife. Can't remember all the details though.

Just like most of the "professional" mule deer hunters these days he ended up being a poaching scum bag. But he wrote a book with some big bucks in it so I assume the general public dosn't care and we should be more than willing to forgive him.

I have an autographed copy of his book which actually was a great book to read. Of course I had to assume alot of it is fiction after I heard the story behind it a few years back.

The fiction part would be WHEN he killed all those big bucks, because he did kill them all.Just a bit outside of season!

I personally met Cal 26 years ago, ( I was 25) as a aspring young bowhunter. I bought his book and spent the afternoon talking with him. I dont know what he actually did that was illegal, something for sure but I can tell you as a hunter he was the real deal. I have read them all and his book is by far the best hunting book I know of. I lost my copy so if anyone finds one I would like to purchase it. It is a classic. He taught me things that day that I have not heard from anyone else since and that have helped me collect an impressive public land/non guided collection of big game.(All legal I might add) He may have commited some "human errors" but I assure you, do not discount the mans knowlage of the wild game he grew up with.He was special. Great hunting! Lemondog.

Not disputing what you (Lemondog) stated about Cal's ability and knowledge of wild game and the outdoors, etc. But What I have a hard time with is when guys that have that indepth knowledge and ability to harvest good animals, yet can't do it within the same guidelines that the rest of us are. And perhaps Cal was simply a product of his generation, meaning that the whole "poaching" and/or "bending the rules" thing was not as big a deal back then (30 years ago) as it it now. However, even if that were the case, when you start to get high profile enough to write books about your success, it takes some gumption to put into print that your hunts were legal and fairchase, when in fact many were not. In any circumstance or time, that is wrong and misleading. The worst part of every story like this (and there seems to be more and more) is that simply put: it's poaching! It's taking an animal away from the numerous honest and ethical hunters trying to do it the right way. I don't know Cal Coziah....have never met him personally. I have not read his books (probabely never will), but it's guys that do the unethical things like this that are not only losing sight of the big picture, but they screw alot of good honest hard-working hunters out of potentially a once-in-a lifetime animal! In my opinion, poachers big-time or small-time get everything they deserve.
