James, who is 4 1/2 years old this year, has been deer hunting for three years. The first year, he and I rode in the truck while mom was hunting.
Last year, we llama-packed 5 uphill miles into a wilderness area. After there, my two partners went hunting, while James and I hung around the tent site and I glassed a lot. One morning, I spotted two big deer across the canyon and showed James in the spotting scope. He said, "there's a deer, you should SHOOT it".
I invited the young man who was with us to stalk the deer, but he said his hip hurt and he was too tired. He'd stay with James while I made the stalk.
I handed James a radio, so he could talk to daddy, and took off. I repeatedly ask him if he could see the deer, when he said he couldn't see them, I was quite disappointed until he explained he couldn't see them, because he was eating grape nuts.
I finally got into position and told him to "watch right now". When I was sure he was watching, I fired. Of course, he saw the deer fall long before hearing the sound of the rifle. He immediately said, "It was a tricky deer, you better shoot again. He ducked! It was pretty tricky".
That deer is the one in the picture with me.
The one he and I got this year is the one with him sitting on it. He actually walked around while looking for the deer, helped in the spotting and stalking. He was watching through the spotting scope when I shot. When daddy wasn't able to find the downed deer, he even located it for me. He was one proud and excited young man.
The bear in the picture actually tried to eat me during a 9/06 elk hunt. I'm very glad I own a DOUBLE-barrel muzzleloader.
