First Mule deer!

I picked him up during a 5 day hunt in New Mexicos 2b unit. I must have seen 250 deer but only 15 or so bucks with most of those being spikes of forkies. I saw 4-5 medium sized deer.

I finally got mine in the evening of the 4th day.

I posted up at a water hole and watched 18 does and one forkie come in. Then all of a sudden they all spooked and ran 30 or so yards in every direction. About a minute of two later my deer came in.

He made a b line straight for the hole and I shot him at 215 yards.

I swear I must have walked over 50 miles this week and it is a trophy I'll never forget!

Geoff congrats on a fine buck thx 4 posting. I ahve a Co. tag and leaving in 3 days 11 hrs 19 mins. Can you head up there and set up camp for me?

It is an an awesome adventure for sure. It was interesting to see the differences between whitetail hunting and mule deer hunting. Western style hunting was very different for me. I actually resorted back to whitetail hunting in that I posted up and waited for the deer to come to me instead of traveling too the deer. It seems like a lot of the western hunters just move on if they don't see what they want. I found finding some cover in areas I saw deer and waiting and being prepared to work better for me.

The thing I can't get over is how mule deer can just vanish in plain sight. I was trying to move closer to two deer that seemed to just vanish into thin air!

I can't get over the size difference either, those suckers are BIG!

I'm from Mass, so I was a long way from home. I did the hunt as a 2 day guide and outfitted hunt with San Juan Outfitters and Livery. John is first class and I will be back!

very nice! it's nice to see guys who work hard for their animals! congratz and good luck!

Congradualtions on your first Mule deer. After years of hunting whitetails, I finally killed my first mule deer two years ago. I just got my second muley last month. It really does get into your blood. I still love my whitetails, but the highlight of my year, every year, is going out west hunting those muleys.

"Easy now, keep the croshairs right behind his shoulder & squeeze the trigger"
