would you pay 1250 for a unit 22 tag or 3000 for
a unit 21 tag colorado.
has anyone hunted these units before?

LAST EDITED ON Nov-09-07 AT 10:26AM (MST)[p]I think the 22 tag is pretty much a gimmie tag so why pay somebody 1200 bucks when u can have it for 300 bucks in the draw. Something to think about anyways. Unless it is a 4th season tag then that would be a pretty good buy. 3000 for 21 in todays market is going rate. I know of quite a few of the tags went for 3500 for 2nd season last year. All them dang tags just keep going stight up.

I agree 3rd season is the time to go for unit 21. My dad and alot of others I know and all of them have killed bucks over the 180inch mark.

Neither, but thats just me.

I just came back from that part of the world. The third season was hit or miss for most. We killed some decnt bucks but nothing worth $3000. The weatehr was 65 almost every day and I did not see a cloud for 5 straight days. So its hard shelling out money for a tag that is pretty dependent on weather units 11, 12, 22, 21, 10) can be VERY dependent on weather and movement.

To narrow down my answer, unit 22 is a circus complete with a full compliment of Clowns.

Unit 21 is very cool EXCEPT for all the over the counter elk tag holders. I would venture to guess that a just as many unit 22 deer tags are placed on unit 21 deer as legit unti 21 tags on deer. Locals only need to purchase a 50.00 elk tag over the counter to have a reason to be running all over unit 21. ITS A MAJOR PROBLEMO!

Good to hear from you as well. Hope all is well. I still read a lot but don't have time to post or get in pisin' matches. Kids and a busy job will do that I guess!

I have 7 points for resident here in colo. do you guys think i could get a 3rd season tag unit 21? also what are the chances of a junior hunter drawing 2nd or 3rd rifle unit 21

7 POINTS AS A RESIDENT AIN'T GONNA QUITE DO IT!!!

IF YOU HAD 8 MAYBE!!!

AND 9 WOULD PROBABLY SEAL THE DEAL???

Your concern with unit 21 is valid. One side of the road is 21 the other side is 22. However, I can tell you that opening morning of 3rd season found our local gamewarden (headquartered in Rangely) checking hunters along that road, calling them in. If he has a license plate can't he get the name and then he can get the hunter license info? I cannot say if he was there the rest of the time, but I am sure he was thinking the same thing.

I tend to think maybe this part of the unit isn't the best either. So many good roads on top and below now, much different than thirty years ago. Great deer country even better access.

I was responding to five_point_buck's post about Elk tag hunters slipping into unit 21 from 22. The unit boundary between 21 and 22 is a county road, so it would be easy for someone to cross over and hunt a unit they had not drawn a tag for. I was glad to see the game warden checking people.

I would think there would be a bigger threat to the larger bucks after the season by poachers.

Hey David,

If you find an extra 2 tags for $3000 each, I will buy them, and go hunting with you. I have hunted the unit several times. PM me if you can find extra tags, and are serious.
PS-22 is a 1 or 2 preference point unit for 3rd season. Don't waste you time.

To clarify (and expand). Yes, I am sure people cross over from 22 to hunt deer and the new warden in Rangely was very active this year. Rumor has it he's trying to make a name for himself. I support any increase in patrols. This area is VERY accessible and we all know what that leads to.

About the elk tags, ANYONE who buys a OTC elk tag can hut in unit 21. Due to its proximity to Rangely, Dino, and Vernal, it recieves lots of elk pressure (I'm sure folks don't mind seeing a nice muley while elk hunting either). I'm sure the added elk hunting pressure doesn't help the deer tag holders.

It makes no sense. People invest many years of collecting points to go on a Limited entry deer hunt and they run the risk of OTC elk hunters (unlimited numbers!) adding a whole mess of pressure.

It's my belief that the reason you see better bucks coming out of unit 10 is that BOTH the deer and elk tags take FOREVER to draw. The terrain is the same, the food is the same, but there are less folks running around.

All this being said, if you have Hawaii type weather for the season like we did this year, prepare to work your butt off.

Unit 10 has the same problem with elk hunters. I hunted it this year and ran into cow hunters who were screaming down every road on atv's and lifted powerstrokes. They pushed every big deer back into the monument or into the cliffs off of moosehead and without any weather to push them around, not many big bucks were seen let alone killed.

It may not be as bad as you think.

Speaking from my experience this year (3rd combined season), heck there just weren't many hunters around. In fact we didn't run on to any on foot, seriously! The ones we did see were driving on the roads, big deal. Honestly, there just weren't many hunters.

I don't know where all the elk hunters where or the elk for that matter? Plenty of deer everywhere, mature bucks but not necessarily trophy class. We never heard a shot fired either...

Speaking of more good news, we heard that the West Douglas Creek wild horse herd was going to be removed! Yeah!! There are horses everywhere and where we used to see elk they are no longer there.

man i must say, you guys in the states pay wayyy to much for tags
my resident draw tags here in alberta cost me bout 30 bucks a piece
plus i can still buy over the counter doe tags for 15 bucks, comes with two tags

Unit 22 is not worth paying more than the cost of drawing a permit. Unit 21 is worth something but, not sure 3000 is the right $$.

We hunted unit 22, 3rd season and as mentioned it was warm and dry (great camping weather for November). I was checked by the Rangely warden on Monday, then on Wednesday he waved to me as he drove by and on Friday afternoon as we were leaving, he was at the end of the county road at the highway (with his supervisor). He asked us if we had seen a particular truck and then checked our deer.

Elk hunters all over and everytime we bumped into other hunters they were asking if we had seen any elk. Not too many elk taken around the area we were at but, there was allot of elk sign if you got off the road and into the thick stuff. Didn't see but only a couple other boot tracks off the roads. Talked to some elk hunters that were looking for elk in unit 21 and had unit 22 deer permits. I think that could possibly tempt someone if they think they could get away with something. Also, there were some guys from Louisiana, they had unit 12 deer permits and small game licenses. They shooting rabbits in unit 22 and the warden told me was watching them as much as he could. He figured they were doing more than just rabbit hunting.

We had fun and we hope to be back next year.

smokepole, so how did you guys end up doing in 22? are you going to go back next year? is there anyway to get a unit 22 tag that only takes 1 point and bank my other 7 resident points?

2 out of 3, both meat bucks. We hope to draw again next year if were lucky with no points. I don't think you can bank points anymore.

My reasons for 10 being better than 21 are based soley on the pressure issue. In the early part of this century (2000-2001) some really good bucks were coming off both these units. In the past few years, I have just seen beeter racks coming from 10. Just my 2 cents.

Smokepole....

It cracks me up to hear about those dang Louisianin's! They used to hunt a secluded part of a ranch we lease. They are a crazy bunch that liked riding 6 guys deep in a z71, with a quad on the back, and a cooler of Pabst in arms reach behing the rear sliding window. They would quit deer and elk hunting around 7:05 AM and get right after the cottontails. They wore out their welcome after a night of moonshine and "loose talk" about one of the guys sisters started a mini civil war amongst the bunch. I never did see them tag a buck or bull, but the always had a heat-on and fresh rabbits on the fire!

I also think the warden finally found "a specific truck he was looking for". They did a mess of damage and hope they get the book thrown at 'em. Sorry S.O.B's.

A cowboy friend of mine made an interesting observation about the state of the union as it pertains to unit 22, 21, 10, 11.....

With all the new oil/gas crews invading the basin a lot of new pressure has resulted. Not only from the drilling and construction but more so because these guys wrok 7 days on 7 days off. That's alot iof free time to run around the hills 4 wheelin', "target shooting", camping etc. Food for thought if you plan on burning a bunch of points for 21 or 10.

A majority of the people who work 7 on 7 off don't live where they work. So more than likely they will be recreating someplace other than where their rig is.
