Utah Non-Resident Unit Suggestions

Hi All,

Non-resident with 6 points. Looking for suggestions on a unit with good elk numbers...not worried about "trophy" potential.

Looking for a good archery hunt, with access (I am in shape... or will be, hopefully other than round) driving from AZ.

Any suggestions? Realize it may take another couple of years, but I am not getting any younger.

Thanks Andy

Wasatch or Manti would be the most obvious ones. Lots of elk in those units and they give out lots of tags. Hunted Manti archery last year and had a blast, lots of elk and good bulls. Not a ton of monsters running around due to the amount of tags that they give out but a fair amount of mature 6 points. I took a 335" bull on my 9th day hunting after passing on a few smaller bulls. it usually takes 8-10 points to draw a bonus tag as a NR but who knows you might get lucky.

WOULD FISHLAKE BE A GOOD OPTION, I AM CURRENTLY LOOKING AT THAT UNIT.......THANKS FOR YOUR HELP...............YD.

Thanks for the replies.

I hope to draw a tag and have a good experience.... also hope to bring my sons with me and have a great family experience.

Agreed with the Manti. Good unit and I see good bulls on there all the time. Let me know if you draw, I can help and be an extra set of eyes.

Here is what I have heard about Fishlake, I'm sure there are others here who know better than me though. I have not hunted Fishlake but have a friend that hunted it in 2012.
Fishlake has a good sized herd and the overall size of the bulls are probably bigger than Manti. The problem with Fishlake is that there is more private land there and a lot of CWMUs that when the elk get pressured they head onto the CWMUs which you cannot hunt. That being said there are big bulls taken off Fishlake nearly every year.

San Juan. I got lucky and drew with 7 points a few years ago!!! Ok in your shoes I would do Manti, but I would love to hunt fish lake, just don't know the unit well. Brother is similar situation and 9 points. no way to catch the top units for 15 years with point creep so will cash in on a 'lesser' hunt in a year or 2. Keep hoping utah will give archery better season and get the rifle hunt out of the rut, but it ain't going to happen. He won't cash in points this year as we are going to try DIY moose hunt in Alaska!

I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the draw. I also have 6 for antelope which puts me in a good position to get an antelope tag, have 15 points in AZ with still 10+ years wait in my home state.

Have points in Wyoming also....

With the kids hunts (2) boys hurting... and work.... it a great problem to have,

WHAT DO YOU FELLAS THINK ABOUT THE HUNTING QUALITY IN THE NEBO UNIT ???? I DONT HEAR MUCH ABOUT THE NEBO.......THANKS......YD.

Nebo is rebounding, but not a hunt I would want to burn points on.
With 6 points and a desire to hunt archery.
Manti, Dutton, Wasatch, and fishlake, are the units I would apply for.

Nebo WAS re-bounding a little, Then here we go again!

2013 antlerless permit started again, with the herd still under
objective... Even worse , November LE bull permits , again!

IMO, Nebo, headed down hill again........

Looks to me to draw the Manti last year you needed 10 points. 9 points was 33 percent odds and 6 and 7 points was around 10 percent.

I have 11 points and trying to decide to burn or build.......

I'm from Ephraim and I can tell you there were some monsters killed on the Nebo last year. It was a down year for the Manti.

Manti all the way. I basically live on this unit (family property) it's a blast there. The elk herd is healthy and there are plenty of mature bulls. Every now and then I jump the highway to the Nebo side. Are there elk there? Sure, even some mature bulls. But I would never burn 6 points on the Nebo. I would pick Manti 10 times over Wasatch these days. I've seen a huge change just in the past 2 years.

I would say Manti or Fish Lake. If you end up drawing for Fish Lake, just let me know and I will give you lots of tips. I have hunted Fish Lake most of my life and know it really well.

Yep, seems like every time people talk up a unit, the odds drop the next year. Makes it hard to choose........
