Anybody here ever been on this hunt..? It looks like my dad (60yrs old) could draw this tag either this year, or for sure next year. The harvest rates look good, and there are few hunters to compete with, but I'm wondering what the quality of the bulls might be..?

If anybody has hunted this hunt in the past, please help me out. If you prefer to PM, that is just fine with me.

Thanks guys :) :) :)

I have only hunted deer there. But while hunting deer I saw a 7x6 and 6x6 bull. That was enough for me to start putting in for that elk hunt.

Although I've never been on this hunt personally. I have had several friends with this tag. Not saying a guy can't kill a good bull as this is the hunt skronski killed that monster 6x6 on with mossback. The usual bulls I've seen were all around the 300"or smaller mark. They say it's a tough hunt. Take that for whatever it's worth. Good luck to your dad on what ever you do.

was tough hunt last year help 2 freinds of the family out ther.
both shot rag 5 points on day 7and day 8 because it was biggest bulls they had seen
. lucked into them they were both ready to shoot spikes .
because that is only bulls they had seen up to this point .
they both hunted from colorado border to tribal border on the west.
said they would never do this hunt agin and tell every one they knew also.

BRage,
While I have never been on a late Books hunt, I have been on other late hunts. Unless you have some private land that big bulls run into, IMO all late elk hunts are are a real challenge.
That time of year, the big bulls pull off into secluded isolated spots to lick their rut wounds, and build a little strength for the winter. Unless you know where to look, it can be very frustrating.
One year on the Manti I saw an honest 1000 elk without ever seeing a bull bigger than a rag horn.
That sounds bleak but that is the way I see it.

I appreciate the responses guys. I guess there is a reason it only takes about 10 or 11 points to draw the tag. I think we may spend some time out there this year during that hunt, just to see how it goes. And if it looks promising, we may put in for it next year. :)
