Guiding question...

Last week I guided a couple of guys on a "trophy" muley hunt. It was a hard hunt in a less then desireble unit. After combing the mountain for four days, my hunters left early and unhappy.(not with me but with the outfitter) I busted my hump, but still felt a little guilty when they told me "your the hardest working guide we've ever had." They also left me a very generous tip, which I was sort of reluctant to take. I felt as though I didn't completely do my job, even though I had done everything I could. So, question is, do you guys ever feel guilty or un-deserving for an unsucessful hunt? It was the first time I have gone unsucessfull as a guide.

If you worked to the best of your ability and the clients went home happy with your performance, then there is no reason to feel guilty. My grandad said in order to kill big deer you must hunt where big deer live. It sounds to me like that was the problem. Maybe the outfitter misrepresented the hunt, or the clients might have misunderstood the outfitter, which in my experience is pretty common. We had a hunter on a management hunt last year that booked with us to kill a management deer. After seeing one of the trophy deer killed by a trophy paying hunter, he through a big fit and left after two days. He said he was cheated. He had a chance to shoot a 165 inch 4X3 that had 3 inch eyeguards, looking for a trohpy we would not let him shoot. he paid $2000 and the trophy hunters paid $4000. Many hunters do not understand what they book and have higher expectations than what can be offered. You can only do your job as a guide and that is it. Sounds to me like you did just that.

I know I did everything I could, but I still cant get myself to feel good about it. It was a sticky situation all the way around. They paid for a trophy hunt and were promised "170-190" class deer (it is my opinion that guides and outfitters should NEVER make gaurentee's) I just feel as though I didn't completly do my job. I have a hard time taking compliments and tips when guys go empty handed. Maybe I take to much upon myself, I don't know.

If they gave you the tip, then they felt you earned it. You obviously impressed them; you should feel good about that.

I have been on a couple of hunts were the outfitter put the guides in a "bad situation". I tipped both of the guides for their efforts, but the outfitters had mislead us and other hunters. I would hope that you would confront the outfitter, and never guide for him again.
