AZ Rut Activity

Any rut activity occurring North of the Grand Canyon? Any good reports from some of the earlier hunters?

Thank you for your responses. Heading up next week and planning on watching the does, in hopes that a bruiser will be in hot pursuit. Good luck to anyone else heading up!

I'll be up this weekend for one last scouting trip before the hunt. Everything I've heard is that the does are high, low, and in between, with the bigger bucks staying higher and sticking to the thicker cover. Doesn't look like any weather in sight to push them off the top, and with the above normal temperatures the rut could get off to a slow start. Should turn out to be an interesting hunt for sure.

The deer are just waitng for us to show up. The rut will swing into full gear about late next week.

The forecast shows Jacob Lake cooling down to a high of 46 by next Wed. it's time for the bucks to go in so a little cooler weather should fire them up, but snow on top to push them down is a long shot I bet.

Now it's also calling for possible snow as well!!! That could be just the break we need :)

I was there last weekend. Way to warm.Lots of deer still up high. Sure hope it does cool down and we get some snow by next week.

What unit are you guy's hunting?
Call it a blessing in disguise, my father, friend and I guide on the strip, never received any calls to guide this year. My cousin has a client, uncle has 3 clients, and none have killed yet. Extremely hard hunt so far. Only 1 buck killed so far that we have heard of, a 180" 4x5 28" wide opening day.
Good luck to all.

I'll be in 12 AW next week. Got a friend with one of your family on B right now.
So, with no snow but cold weather, are the big bucks still going to head down, or stay up in the pines ? I've been planning for months to hunt low, and ready for snow.

New report says chance of snow Tuesday, highs Wed through Fri 40-45 and lows in the low 20's. they'll be rutting, question is how long will it take to drop down the hill.

We are hunting 12B. We got a few honey holes that usually produce for us, regardless of weather. The rut kicking into gear just makes things really exciting. Can't wait to see horn!

I just got back from my last scouting trip before the late hunt. It's pretty warm up there and I think the deer are pretty spread out. I saw deer and fresh sign at 7,000+ foot elevations all the way down to the winter range. Deer that I glassed up in the evening were only coming out at gray light, and the deer I glassed in the morning were heading for cover within a few minutes of the sun hitting them. I saw no bucks while glassing, but did see a couple small ones from the road.

I did find this nice 91 inch shed on the same hill side I'll be glassing from on Friday morning!

Good luck to everyone!!!

Note to self;
Look for the guy drinking Diet Dr. Pepper.

Nice shed, I hope you find the buck that left them, and if you don't, I hope I do.

>Just got back from the strip and the bucks were not doing much rutting. Both bucks that were taken from our camp were shot from water. Both bucks were together and not with does. Many other big bucks were spotted together and not chashing does like years before. It never froze water the whole time we were up there and was around 80 by noon.Hot and dusty, will be heading to 12a w in a day .

The way it looks, they may not rut until X-mas. Heading to 12B in the morn with two hunters.. Wish us luck!!!

I've been watching accu-weather and it looks like the snow storm we have all been waiting for will show up the evening of Thursday 11-29, and snow all weekend.
I'm headed for 12 AW tomorrow night, good luck to all of you late tag holders.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-07 AT 06:49AM (MST)[p]I'd trust Hillary before I trust a weather report that is nine days out!!

Ok, maybe not Hillary, but I still wouldn't trust a weather report that far.

It's Bush's fault!!!
