Hello,

I'm new to the forum, I was thinking about entering my 14 year old son into the Utah Youth Elk Hunt. I was hoping to get some feedback about draw odds, locations in Utah etc. This will be his first hunt so I want to make it a positive experience.

Thanks
Evan

It allows you to hunt any "open bull" unit during the september rut (9-13 to 9-21). Most guys will probably head to the Uinta's, as it has the most public land of any of the any bull units.

Here is the map of the units.

Draw odds are rough, 4629 applicants for 270 tags last year, 1:17 odds. Put this way, my kid has a better chance of drawing a CWMU Elk than he does the general youth tag!

It's a tough hunt to draw. Most think since it's a youth hunt it's easy to draw. Not being a limited entry hunt it can be tough to find elk in some areas. I can be a fun hunt since the elk should be rutting. If you can find a area where the limited entry hunters may push the elk back on to a open bull area . That may work for you .

+1

I have participated in this hunt the last two years, I hope to get to participate again this year as well, by far the funnest hunt/s I have ever been on in Utah. Even compared to the limited entry hunts, The elk are bugling like crazy and the kids are way excited.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-04-14 AT 10:54AM (MST)[p]Yep. Bugling elk, very few other hunters and having, watching and teaching a youth how to hunt elk is exciting to me. Done it twice and have no more youth of my own, but hope others I know will draw and I'll be there in a heart beat. The only down side is time spent hunting. The youth are in school and it is tuff to hunt more than the weekend or possibly three day weekends. However it is still very realistic to get it done. On this hunt, just showing a youth how to hunt and seeing their face the first time a elk screams out a bugle makes this hunt a success. Best of luck.

I put one of my kids in every year and never drew. The other drew the first year I put him in. So, your son may or likely may not draw this permit. It's a fun hunt if he draws. Good Luck!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-03-14 AT 10:46PM (MST)[p]My oldest son drew the first year of the program. Not sure many people new about it that first year. We where lucky to get on a unit that went from limited entry to a open unit . He shot a great bull 6 x 6 bull when he was 15 years old. My other two kids never drew a tag. But it was a great time . But hunting with you kids always is. :)
I was not talking down the hunt. Just trying to give you a realistic view of you chances.

I just applied my son. I hope he draws. You all make it sound fun as heck. I know he'd love to be in close on some screaming bulls.

My son drew the tag in 2011 after two years of applying. He?s one lucky kid. In 2009 he drew a Book Cliffs Archery Deer Permit with 0 points. Anyway, I took him in the Uinta?s where we archery elk hunt and had a hard time finding a bull. In 2 plus days of hunting we didn't hear a peep. It was a tough hunt but found a bull for him on the last Saturday. It was a nice reward for his hard work, but it wasn?t a walk in the park. Hoping one of my twin girls draw this year. Good luck to everyone!

Came across this while searching for info on where to start. I drew the early youth any bull tag. I am a non res, and haven't ever tagged an elk. If anyone has any info they'd like to share please let me know. Although it is an any weapon hunt I'll be using my bow mainly because I'm a young stupid 17 year old.
