Haven't heard much about the Monroe lately. I've got a good chance at the muzzleloader tag this year with 17 points . Anybody got any info on the unit from the last couple years?

17 points for a muzzy tag? Are you non resident? Is that what it takes for a muZy tag nowadays?
I kinda grew up on that mtn. Killed a non typ in 07 archery. My dad drew in 08, hunted it again in 09 and 11 with friends and family.
Easier unit as far as terrain. The glassing opportunities are limited. The elk rut like crazy.
A 300-330 bull is an all day everyday kind of bull on the unit. If your willing to scout and hunt all day there are still some really good bulls on the unit.

I have a cabin on the Cove Mt area and spend a fair amount of time down there. I think if you are patient a 350 bull is definitely realistic. Watched a 360-370 bull last year that didn't get taken unless it was on the late hunt. Beautiful animal. Saw two other bulls that would go 340-350. Also saw a non typical 7x8 that was really young, maybe 4.5 years old, don't know if he made it through or not.
The unit should get even better in the coming years because the spike elk tags for the any weapon hunt (rifle) have been eliminated. In the area I am familiar with the number of big bulls has decreased a lot in the last 7-8 years. We regularly saw 10-12 325 to 360 bulls every time we went into our cabin and very often we could sit on our deck and watch them bed down in the meadow. There have been some big bulls over the years take a siesta there. Good luck to you.

Geeezz nebo! That sounds a bit spoiled having a pad in the middle of a meadow full of bulls!
Seems a little TOO easy if you start deck-dumping bulls from the casa!
Sorry. My jealousy is oozing out? LOL

Yes- Just off the Long Flat road to the south. We are by a little lake we call Boulder Lake. Its not really big enough to be called a lake, but we like to call it a lake- about 75 yards long and 40 yards wide and 16 feet deep at its deepest. We can walk south about 200 yards up the hill through the timber and get to Deep Lake.

Lucky dog! What do you drive? I'll keep my eye open for you this summer. I'm in a silver 4 door jeep wrangler or a white mega cab.

Blue Tahoe or Black & silver Chev extended cab. theres a little sign on our road that says Lake Meadow Drive. Will be glad to meet you

I'm with LBH! I feel left out and a bit jealous too...not really, just happy to hear that the elk are doing well down there and you guys get to enjoy them.
I've had a couple friends hunt it with family over the years but everything I know about the unit you could put in your eye.
The archery deer hunting used to be fantasctic down there YEARS ago but I don't remember ever seeing elk. Remember I said YEARS ago and I suspect the elk population has flourished since my stints on the mountain.
Good luck to ya'll in the drawings and on the hunts.
Always fun to follow what's happening.
Zeke

I am worried about the elk on this unit. Last year we had several good young bulls hitting the trail cams but this year we have seen 1 mature bull a 6x7 and 4 young bulls not the same ones from last year. The numbers seem down to me.
