Utah Southwest Desert Elk

I was lucky enough to get the Muzzle Loader tag for the Southwest Desert at the Expo. I have already been doing a lot of research about the area but I am trying to use all avenues. I am from Southeast Wyoming so I will only be able to get down there maybe one time this summer. As we all say I am not looking for anyones honey hole just a place to start looking. I am going to be looking for a bruiser. I have several good bulls in the 340 range but I know the potential for a giant is there in this area. Am I being unreasonable to be holding out for 370 or better? Or should I be setting my sights lower? Thanks for the help in advance.

It's been a while since I've been out venturing the unit, but there will be bulls of that caliber out there. If you have a few nice bulls already, then nothing wrong with setting your sights for something bigger.

Hope you have lots of fun and best of luck.

I'm far from an expert, but I know guys who have hunted that unit a lot, and while there are bulls of that caliber on the unit, "holding out" for a 370 could reward you with tag soup. That is true in any unit in the state!
In my book, setting sights high is different than "holding out" Regardless that's a great tag. Congratulations and best of luck

Pm Sent! I drew the early rifle out there this year. there are definitely bulls of that caliber on the unit but you will have to hunt hard for them. Not an easy task, but definitely doable. Good luck

Great unit lots of bulls if you know where to look , and i do , we usually look over 8-10 350 bulls ,daily ,. so holding out for a monster isnt a bad idea one bull in perticular we saw last year, last few years actually .and in a one mile section of jungle , will go 430 carries a baseball bat sized club off his sword/4 and is an amazing bull to see. i live on this unit almost all summer , this year i also have a le tag for speedgoats on the unit if you need any help or info pm me !

Here we go again, longshooter the spike killing machine has a 430in bull already found. Do you have pics of this bull or even any video? I would be careful getting any advice from a dude that claims to see 8-10 bulls every day, going 350 and better on this unit. JMO

Maybe 8-10 years ago you could see 8-10 350 bulls a day on the SW desert. Please don't go into the hunt with these expectations this year. If you do you will be dissapointed. It is still very possible to kill a 350 plus bull. You will have to be patient and hunt hard. Let the crowds clear out after the first weekend, then keep moving and you should have a great hunt.

I've spent more time out there than most people. I've seen some incredible bulls, and its possible to kill one. No one is seeing 8-10, 350" bulls everyday. That's total exaggeration. Still, I would love to have the tag over any other tag in the state.
