UT tag allotment Link

Someone help me understand. According to the report all the Wasatch units combined have a total deer population of 35,500 animals. If fish and game estimates there are 15 bucks per 100 doe's, that leaves 5,325 total bucks. The recommended tag number is 11,900 total buck tags. That means that every damn buck could be killed and there would still be half the hunters without a deer. I know that it doesn't work out like that, but it seems screwed up that the division sells more product then they have. Like an airline selling too many seats on a plane.

If I'm wrong tell me.

Interesting that for the last three years the Ogden unit had 5-600 elk but now it has 2000??? We need to sell those elk to other states!!! We'd make a killing with these hybrid elk who produce 4-5 calves per cow every year. Lol

Factor in that success rates run no more than 20% ish. So figure 2500 bucks will be killed.

I understand that. I appreciate the response, but.. I still feel that fish and game should not sell more tags then they have bucks, bulls, goats, sheep, bears, whatever. What if everyone had a banner year? Too many animals are taken from the herd. This is one of the reasons, IMO that the deer herd is suffering so much.

Since this is the elk forum, I will give you another example. The Wasatch received WAY too many cow tags last year, and it was a slaughter. Fish and game finally pulled their head out and dropped cow tags down to 350 this year. I don't understand the mentality of sell, sell, sell, and then when its painfully obvious that the herds are not recovering, then they drop tags.

On another note, Bull tags increased again on the Wasatch units. Might only take a couple points to draw it before long. Of course there wont be enough bulls to go around, but by golly everyone will have a tag.

a lot of cow tags for San Juan herds.

Broadfork, you are missing something in your calculations. Approximately half of the fawns included in that population estimate of 35,500 (and fawns are NOT counted as bucks in the post season buck to doe ratio classifications) will be yearling bucks next fall. Yearling bucks make up a big percentage of the harvest each year, and when you factor them in that will increase the number of bucks available to hunters substantially.

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

We also need to remember that F&G are bound by law to meet or attempt to meet herd objectives that are set by the wildlife board. Once those numbers are set, they have to attempt to meet them.......tough job. Inexact science at best. I have a friend who is a biologist who get just as frustrated about tag allotments as I do, but his hands are tied by the numbers given to him.
I also think that we as hunters are our own worst enemy. How many times have you heard a guy complain about there not being any good bucks anymore and when you look in the back of his truck its full up of two points that he and his buddies shot! That guy is just as much a problem as any coyote, bear or lion. I don't mind meat hunting. I am all for it, but don't complain about fewer big bucks if you shoot small ones.

I agree with everything in your post!

PS; There are two camps of deer hunters, those who want to kill a deer (opportunity hunters) and those who want something bigger (trophy hunter). Neither group is wrong. Repeat, neither group is wrong!
