Not having drawn a tag in years and finally drawing a Wyoming Moose and Montana Mtn. goat my scouting is somewhat limited now. I'm in about 10 more drawings, its the first time I am saying don't draw, please don't draw anymore. I was wondering if anybody has any information on Montana Mtn. goat unit 326. I would appreciate any help on the unit and goat hunting not having hunted them before. Thanks!

How many tags are drawn for that unit? I've been around there a few times & haven't seen any, but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Maybe I wasn't high enough. heh heh. I do know there are some cougars in there. They ate part of my deer.

I think they give out about 16 tags or so... Lots of goats, easy ones can be had, but the "real" goat country starts about 6-8 miles from the parking lot...

I know 326 quite well and shot a 9" billy on November 1 a few years ago. The longer hair is definately worth the wait. I wouldn't even go before November 1st. Just fly the area the day before you go and you can save yourself a lot of headaches and wasted time, weather permitting.

Nov 1st on in the snowy rocks does not sound like fun to me at all!!!

Does snow push goats down or do they just keep hanging on the sheer rock stuff??

They pretty much wait out the weather right where they are durring summer. They will spend even a little more time on the windswept rocks searching for lichen if the snow is too deep in the slides where grass is.

Cool.
This is all I see in my dreams now.

I've spent more than a few late November days in Montana wearing a light jacket and climbing peaks. The year I shot my goat the snow was up past my knees on November 1st and 2 weeks later it was beautiful out and most of the snow melted off. Don't rely on that but it does happen quite often. The odds of getting snowed out and continuing crappy weather the entire month of November are very low. Don't hunt before late October or you will regret it. Look at a goat hide shot in early October compared to early November. There is a big difference. The hair is the trophy!

I agree with Zigga. I don't regret hunting late October at all, since my billy had a fantastic coat. But we also toyed with the weather, in fact we delayed for 2 days due to a blizzard. Then we were blessed with mild weather during the whole hunt. Who woulda thunk it would be mid-60's at 11000 feet in October??

Hmmmmm. Well, the hide is the biggest "trophy" aspect for me, but I am also thinking I will be very happy with even a medium good hide if I take it with my longbow....

Decisions, decisions.
