Hornady FPB's on elk

I should draw a Muzzy elk tag here in Colorado this year. I'm looking at switching bullets. Last time I muzzy hunted I used Powerbelts and although they grouped well I lost a bull that I shot at 30 yards broadside. I've heard of others having a bad experience with them as well.

I bought some FPB's to try out just wandering how they perform on elk. They seem to shoot good.

Any other suggestions?

FPB's is what I would use in CO for Muzzy from my research but I have not tried them yet. I had bad experiences with powerbelts myself and will NEVER use them again. Good luck with your CO tag. I hope to draw 61 archery next year or 76 muzzy is an option.

I have had excellent results with the FPB in the 350 grain. Killed several elk with them out to 250 yards. I prefer BH 209 powder loaded at 95 grains by volume. They seem to shoot better for me keeping my powder under 100 grains.

I have killed 3 elk with the 350 gr FPB. loaded with 95 gr BH 209 or 90 gr fffg 777. I would say if they shoot well in your gun you are good to go.

Depends on what gun you are using, but the 460 gr no excuses has a good track record as well although I have not used them. Most people do 80-90 gr with them.

I could not get the FPB's to group out of my gun. I went from 40 grains of powder, all the way up to 120 grains. That is why I went with the powerbelts, they were a last resort and they grouped better than anything else. Shot my elk at 75 yards and it died about that far away. Found the bullet on the otherside inbetween the ribs and the skin. It held together nicely.

Not too bad for my first muzzleloader elk.

If you trust Randy Wakeman's opinion (I do) - he likes them:

Haven't used them myself. The only bull I've killed with a conical was with a TC Maxi Hunter - I wasn't impressed. Killed lots with sabots.

I had good luck with hornady fpb's last year. I shot good groups out to 200yds. I ended up shooting my muley at 186 yds. I used bh209 and a William's peep site. thor's also shot well, but you have to make sure you get plenty to start with because they were back ordered before season last year. I tried the no excuse, and didn't have any luck with them out of my tc omega.
