There has been almost no news out of 13B this year. Now that the unit is closed, what were the general observations on the hunt?

The report I got from a few friends that were up there hunting was HOT,DRY and no Rut activity. A few bombers were seen but they came home empty handed. I did hear of a couple of big bucks that were shot at water holes.

This is what I saw on the strip. The camp down from us took a heavy 6x6 around 25 wide in the mid 190's.Saw one buck from another camp 6x6 30 wide 227.The father and son from our camp did well with one heavy 6x4 25 wide 196 and a super heavy 5x6 29 wide and 201.Hot,dry and dusty is right on the money.Saw a few small bucks taken that were a waste of a strip tag!!!Most hunters were not seeing big bucks and others were just not seeing deer at all?Had two real pigs spotted but just could never get them located out of the thick p-j,in close.Luke came by camp on day 6 and only checked 7 deer at that time.Maybe now they will drop the tags back to around 50 where they should be,but don't hold your breath.Az G/F is all about money and killing every deer possiable!!!!

Very hot, very dry. One of the worst years up there anyone can remember. Idcurs, i heard that 6x6 buck was re-scored and only went 205. Still a stud though.

I saw 26 bucks in 10 days. The guys with me saw another 25 bucks but nothing over 180 Of the ones I saw two were in 195 class, two in 180 range, several in 170 range and the rest smaller. I only saw one buck rutting and he was a 2 point.I think most of bigger bucks stayed up in the trees and won't be seen until the rut picks up.Weather was 20 degrees above normal. I saw Luke on Sunday PM and he said it was the worst year he was ever aware of.I heard that two big name guides went 0 for 8.Chad Smith's hunters got a 224 and a 219. Luke said many camps gave up and left days before the hunt was over.

The last few days of the hunt there were smaller bucks <160 with a doe or two. Several of them had moved down the mountain. Of the ones I saw, the big boys were just starting to think about rutting.
I did see at least one buck per day but the most frustrating hunt I have ever been on.
This was a tough year Ryan Hatch said many bucks were 20 or 30 inches smaller than last year. Trying to take a 190 buck this year is like a 210 or a 220 on a good year and how many 220 bucks are taken on a good year.
I passed on the bucks and hopefully they will grow up, get a wet year and someone else can have a successful hunt of a lifetime.

You must have a lot of deer on the wall over 180 to pass on a 180-195 incher. I have hunted that in 03 and your hunt actually sounds like you saw about 5-6 times more deer than anyone else on a good year. I saw 1 deer on my whole hunt and I was with chad smith. Everyone has the wrong idea on this unit as far as I am concerned there aren't many deer up there.

Sorry for the confusing post but one of the 195 bucks was seen before the hunt the other was seen at 900 yards and I never got close enough to shoot and I never saw him again.I know the last day or two hunters start shooting so they can have a "successful hunt" but using the tag is not my total definition of success.

That is interesting about your 03 hunt but read my recent post and it will explain the passing of some bucks. I would have shot the 195 if given a chance. I passed a 185 type on day 4 since I was hunting some bucks I thought would score around 200. I tried to hunt the 185 on the last evening of the hunt but could not locate him. The quantity of the bucks was ok but they were smaller than I had hoped for even given a dry year.I saw 5 bucks one day and a guy with me also saw 5 bucks one other day. There are some bucks there but not easy to find.

I was told before the hunt you could go days without seeing a deer and you could but there are deer there but if they are in the pj and not in rut, good luck. A friend saw a 190 in a light the day before the hunt but I never saw the buck and was all over that area along with numerous other hunters and guides. That buck was going to water one hour after dark. A big nocturnal buck not in the rut can easily die of old age there.
Given the deer I saw I am disappointed the number of tags was increased last year. I am concerned over the long term effects it will cause . I want that unit to be the number one deer hunt in the country. With that many tags plus some archery tags next year, I am not sure

With the low success rate the game and fish will probably up the number of tags again.
I know of a guide and good hunter who was up there and was seeing 1-2 bucks per day but not what he wanted and filled out on the last day.

For most "casual hunters" go somewhere else. Given the miles driven, gas prices, low deer densities etc you will be frustrated often.
I made the decision the day I drew the tag I would not shoot a 170 type deer even on last evening. I would let a 170 grow up. The last morning I had a 165 buck at 150 yards for 20 minutes and never even considered pulling the trigger. An hour later someone dropped a 140 incher near me. Personal choice thats all.As the saying goes you can not take a 200 inch buck if you shoot a smaller buck with six days left in the hunt.

Hope I draw next year with the hold over of bucks from this year. I like that you did shoot a small buck, I hope I can do it the same way if a don't kill a big one.

Thr strip can be feast or famine on any year.Just because some hunters don't see deer does not mean others don't.I know of a couple of Chad Smith's guides that saw over 50 bucks on a weekend then only to find 6 the next.My buddy and I spent 6 weekends before the hunt looking for the strip monster. From Black rock to Snap point and every where in between. Some weekends we only saw one buck others we saw over 20.The biggest was around 240+ a couple in the 220 range and some around 190 to 200.The hunt numbers need to be lower and there NEEDS to be a point restriction on this hunt as well a 13A.Why in the world would anyone
shoot a 140 inch buck on this hunt? Both 13 units need to be managed much better for true trophy deer. When I had my tag in 2001 I wanted a buck with trash over 200 I passed some very good bucks to shoot my 33inch wide 6x6 222 on day 9.Every year is tough on the strip and there have always been hunters that have not seen many or big deer.To many are lead to believe that there is a 30 inch wide 220 monster on every chaining or canyon in aint so there or anywhere else!I just hope all the hunters that had a bad hunt will tell all the other hunters to never put in for this unit-helps my odds a bunch!

"Why in the world would anyone
shoot a 140 inch buck on this hunt?"

Perhaps that is what they want.

It's Bush's fault!!!

Ram, sounds like you had a great hunt even though you didn't shoot anything. Did you get any pics or video footage of these deer? I'd like to see some if you have any.

Idcurs:

Good point, as I stated I would like to see the number of permits reduced. Game and Fish is managing for money, I mean hunting opportunities so I would not oppose a fee increase for the strip hunts only. Utah does that and that way serious trophy hunters will pay more for the super hunts and Game and Fish receives more money.

When I was at Ryan's office a nice guy came in who had a 12B late hunt. He was from Phoenix and looking for any buck with antlers.12B is a long drive from Phoenix for any antlered deer.

That is his right but I think these units should be managed for true trophies.

Again for those that have not hunted on the strip, it can be difficult, frustrating, and expensive. There was a nice guy I ran into who was past president of Arizona Deer Association and he started with 120 gallons of gas and was buying 50 gallons every other day. Do the math at $3.10 a gallon. If that guy is reading, I would like to talk to him.

Well I see I wasn't the only one who

1) Thought there were way too many tags issued up there
and
2) Didn't see as many bucks as we usually do.

My little brother had a tag and we started off hunting in the north. He had had found a group of 10-13 bucks hanging out together--one a 32 inch 3 X 3 with a "little trash" and a cool and classic looking 30" 4 X 4.

He was up there 10 days before the hunt started and was looking at spots I had found in previous years that had produced some dandy bucks.

(Could you believe the fire damage on Black Rock?)

Anyway our best buck we saw during scouting was the day before the hunt started. He was out in the desert and was a 34 inch 4 X 4. He was a young buck and didn't have a lot of mass nor long points...But he was 34 inches wide.

We hunted for that buck for three different days after the opener and saw six other bucks, but not that big guy..

We looked at all the "hot spots" up north and saw little. By day 6 we had seen just 11 bucks, the best being a real heavy 4 X 3 that we passed on.

We did follow a buck the day after the "sprinkle" out in the sand dunes that was sinking up to the tops of his dew claws and had a track about 4 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. A six mile walk after him never did turn him up, and he's still out there!

After hearing that the south part of the unit had cleared out, plans were made to go there.

We stayed with a friend at Poverty. Poor us, went from a nice, comfortable 5th wheel trailer to a dusty and hard floor in a wall tent.

Anyway first day at my favorite "spot" I see 10 deer, 5 bucks and 5 does. Largest is a 5 X 4..great buck. Some says he scores right at 200. Only problem little bro has gone off with our friend and I can't get him. I watch the deer for over an hour before I hear shots.

Turns out another Kingman hunter (Troy Nolte) nails him while his buddy Jake Kile gets the second largest buck of the herd. I got photos...

That evening we find an old regression buck ( 4 X 2) that is rutting his head off with 8 does. Has a nice 24" 4 X 4 with him ( young buck though) We pass with the comment-- "that's a Saturday evening buck".

Next day I find a 180 class heavy 4 X 4 at less than 200 yards. Little bro can't see him in the scope! Saturday little bro misses that same buck at a ridiculous range(125 yards). We have to change guns.

A friend and I find another regression buck (4 X 3) on a flat. Another shoots at him but misses. We see him pushing does into the trees--"Gary will shoo that buck tomorrow if he sees him" I tell my friend.

Sunday morning and its crunch time. Little bro and our friend Jay are hid out in trees adjacent to a flat.

Friend and I cruising other burns looking for last minute shooter.

Gary finds huge 4 X 4 but can't shoot at him at 350 yards due to caliber of replacement gun ( 22-250)

We find 24" 4 X 3 that's a shooter. We head back towards Gary and friend when we hear, "I got him, I got him".

Seems as though that old regression buck ran in front of him at 175 yards trying to keep up with some does.

First shot knocks buck down, second shot seals the deal. Buck field dressed weight is well over 200 lbs. Maybe had one more year as teeth were really worn down.

Little bro did the herd a favor, getting this old warrior out of the gene pool.

Our total was 30 bucks seen during the hunt...

Yeah, what we need is more tags issued for that hunt.

Sure can't wait to see how many archery tags will be issued for this unit in 2008. Those bucks will be all on the waters at that time and having never been hunted during that time period before ought to make for some real good opportunities for those that can shoot a bow and get drawn.

Don Martin

P.S. Congrats to Kingman resident Blake Chapman and his 226 6 X 5 and to Chad's hunter who got that awesome 219 buck on day 8. Kingman residents Larry and Randy Finch got 206 and 191 bucks respectively.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-21-07 AT 11:03PM (MST)[p]want to help the deer in arizona, quit letting all the guides use trail cams some of the guides have 15 to 20 cams on all the water holes how can you keep the good genes, when your killing all the bucks with them,
if its not the cams, its the chute planes

25 gallons per day?
Sounds like he needs to spend more time glassing than driving!

Don, great narrative, thanks! I do have one burning question, though. Why would anyone with the experience you guys have be out there hunting with a varmint rifle instead of an appropriate caliber? You guys know this tag comes along very rarely, even for residents, why minimize a one time opportunity by using a coyote gun? Surely, someone in your group has to own at least a .25-06 to bring along as a spare rifle???

I have seen pics of the bucks that Chad Smiths camp took... they are some nice bucks. I hunted the strip in 2002 and bucks can be few and far between..

Congrats to all that drew that tag and enjoyed the hunt

I also had a 13b thag this year. I had max. points for the once in a life time monster muley hunt. Not a hunt that one goes to kill a 170 to 180 inch class buck. Tough hunt.Hot, dry & dusty was the entire hunt. I think that that little tiny bit of rain was on day 3,but it wasn't much. I usally saw 2-5 bucks per day. Little to no rut activity most of the time. I did turn down a 35" 4x4 with crabed back forks on both sides on the 3rd day. He had good mass, great frame, eye guards, but no back forks.

Day 5, I turned down the biggest 2 point that I had ever seen. He was a 40" cactus buck "in velvet" with a bunch of junk coming from his bases. He was a neat buck, but still only a 2 point. again, this hunt is'nt the kind of hunt that you want to shoot a 2 point. I did see serval bucks that were mid 170 type deer, but turned them down.

On the 9th day, I did see a buck that was well over 200",but he was over a mile away and I only had about 20 minutes of light left. I know that I never would have made it on time. The only other buck to speak of was a 200+ non typ. that I saw in the head lights, but I had to wait 20 minutes for the sun to come up, and never could find him again.

I never squeezed the trigger on this hunt. It not about killing, its about hunting.

My only problem on this hunt was how I ended it. The last day at dark I set my Swarovski SLC 10x42 bino's on the hood of my truck and drove off not knowing. Then coming off the mountain from Flagstaff I broke down. My truck froze up the right front hub bearing. Very costly, and thats all I have to say about that!

A was no better. The two units usually hunt about the same so I don't get that comment gila.

The hunt starts a week later So the rut and weather get better, A dont close till the 25th, and my bet is 13a hunters will do gooder.

You guys need to look around. There was a 43inch 240 monster killed in 12aw also

what site was that on gila? i heard about that buck this morning from a guy that saw it at the lodge up there. said that he taped it at 43 inches wide with a ton of trash. also heard that it was shot right off the road? dont know how much truth there is to that but would love to hear the story

nevermind gila i found it. that is a huge buck, congrats to the hunter. still would love to hear the whole story, or just how far off the road he was shot. lookin at the picture makes me believe the rumor i heard was true.

Im sure it will be in the mag soon, and ya its a toad. Did you see the Or. buck too?

How many Tags VS how many Nice deer, I believe that number will be low compared to other years,(that number bounces like a rubber ball) because of the weather factor,(just like if they would got a ft of snow it would be the other way) Sure some nice bucks did hit the ground but It sounds like more didn't.

My son had this tag and we had a limited amount of time to hunt. We talked to Luke and Bob Price about the hunt and they both agreed that it was the hottest they had ever seen. We hunted the spots that I hunted in 2003 when I killed a 189 typical. We saw a few does and two small bucks until the last half hour of the last afternoon we were able to hunt. We found a 3x4 26" wide that was in my and my son's eyes a trophy. He is gong to look great on the wall and had a big 300lb plus body. We did fine for the tough conditions and yes I noticed an increase of hunters with the 30 more tags than in 03.
Congrats to all of the hunters who killed big ones.

meanttobbuck, that buck is a great trophy! He's a memento from a great hunt with your son, and you both should be proud to have had a great hunt together. I had the good fortune to take my teenaged son on a late Kaibab hunt last fall, and we had tough hunting like you. My son took the only quality buck we saw in 8 days of hunting, and he's now in our game room, very much a reminder of what a great week we spent together in unit 12.

what site is it on? Can someone post some pictures of it here?

gila, yea should be in the mag soon. kinda looking forward to the story. the oregon buck is unreal, knew oregon had some some toads but that thing is huge!!!

I happened to be up there on the hunt and saw the toad of a buck in the back of a truck. I tapped it at 43" inches from cheater to cheater.

DCP_4506.jpg

Wow! Great deer. I dont think I would have left that in the back of the truck unguarded though.

Yup, that's a heck of a deer. One LUCKY hunter. You don't know the half of it. Buck of a lifetime though.

4678aec03a21ae00.jpg

The story i got was he got too cold so he went back to the truck, when he got near the truck the buck was just standing there. Now i know what im doing wrong, i dress to warm!

Just got an texmes from a buddy just leavin 13a. They went 3 for 3 one over 200. Damnit they still have 10 hrs of drivin
