1st time hunting elk in NM. Hope they are still bugling some Oct 11. My favorite time of year to be in the woods. Appears to be a number of roads and two tracks criss crossing the unit so backpacking may not be required or an option. Just glad to have a tag and ready to start the homework and map prep work.

36 would work for backpacking. 34, yea not so much. Most elk, most hunters, in the center of the unit. Glass will be your friend on that hunt. Lots of places to glass from if you load up topos and sat imagery in arcgis explorer or G.E. CalTOPO is also good for swapping back/forth.

LAST EDITED ON May-12-14 AT 06:37PM (MST)[p]

They will definitely be bugling still. Good unit with lots of elk expect 280-320" bulls and with the option of a 350+ bull to step out

Wapiti is correct about the center of the unit, but also look to the north of the unit, around sixteen springs. Has been and could be a good area....have fun and tag out!!

Lots of elk, quality of bulls nothing like they used to be.

5 years ago a herd bull would almost always be at least 300", last few years could be raghorns and 270" 5x5s. Occasional good bull. Dont set your standards to high.

Thanks for the feedback on what to expect. Would love to have some rain at the right time and crossing my fingers for good weather on the short hunt. My favorite time of year will be here soon.
