Smallest Caliber for large game in Utah ?

IF IT WAS UP TO ME IT WOULD BE NOTHING LESS THAN A .30 CALIBER IN A MAGNUM!!!

THEY'VE CHANGED IT MANY OF TIMES!!!

YOU CAN STILL USE PEA SHOOTERS I DO KNOW THAT!!!

CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT THEIR LAWS ARE ON IT RIGHT NOW???

WE SHOOT GUNS BIG ENOUGH WE DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT!!!

LAST I KNEW:::

IT MUST BE A CENTERFIRE WITH EXPANDING BULLETS!!!

IF YOU'RE USING A HANDGUN IT MUST BE .24 CALIBER OR BIGGER WITH AT LEAST 500 LBS OF ENERGY AT THE MUZZLE!!!

IF THAT DOESN'T COVER PEA SHOOTERS I DON'T KNOW WHAT DOES???

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

I know of a guy that swears by the .223 Ackley improved with quality bullets for deer hunting 200 lb blacktails in Alaska.
He has taken several B&C bucks as well as many many real big ones with this round.
He is a fanatical rifleman capable of superb accuracy.
It works for him, but very few people have the skill needed to make this their standard big game round.
I compare it to landing a 30lb king on 8lb test.
I've done it, but conditions have to be perfect.
I think .243, 7mm-08 or .257 roberts are all about as low as I would go for good sized deer under normal conditions in the west.
Now if you were "hunting" from a blind in front of a feeder, you might get away with those micro calibers.

22 calibers are legal in Utah, and I have known some hunters who use them. But I would highly recomend a minimun .243, and even it should have a premium bullet. I don't even use the small calibers on the small Texas whitetails. The 22's will kill like lighting, if all things are perfect, but things are not always perfect in the field. I know I am goin to catch some flak for this, just my 2 cents worth.

In Idaho a center fire 22 is big enough for deer or elk I think. Strange thing is My .458 Muzzleloader shooting 475 gr bullets at 1400 feet per second has over 1000 foot pounds of energy at 275 yards is not legal for elk. I haven't been able to figure that out yet. Ron

You have to agree to Bessy on this one.....NOT! More people make bad shots with Magnums that they can't handle, and would be better off going back to their .270's

Here is my 2cents worth

Deer 243win or bigger
Elk 270 win or bigger (really on big elk it would be a 30cal)
Moose 30cal but a 338 would be better
Antelope A good round rock from a sling shot
Ducks 20ga 6 shot or bigger
phesants 28ga 4 shot or bigger
Goose 12 ga 2 shot or better
Dog next door any air rifle that will shut him up

Keep in mind there has been a lot of deer and elk killed with 30-30s but I bett there is almost as meny that got wounded

>THEN YOU COULD SHOOT TO THE
>TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN BEFORE
>YOU HIKE TO THE TOP
>OF THE MOUNTAIN!!!

Thats the exact mentality that convinces people to buy big magnums. Meanwhile those of us with the pea shooters will continue to hike to the top of the mountain and kill some nice Bucks ;-)

Come on Bessy , your not really in that state of mind. You'd rather me have my 15 year old daughter shoot a 300 win mag on an antelope hunt and take a big chance that she'll miss because of hard hiiting recoil that she is afraid of rather than her shooting her .243 winchester???? Does the side of your head hurt yet from your ears stretching?

My daughter read this and said Bessy, your just mean! It's pretty funny because she got amped up and went as far as saying she could probably out shoot you with her .243 and your .300 lol. I told her she probably could , that we would just park the four wheeler near his truck where Bessy could see it .lol

any rifle being centerfire is legal in utah. its when you go into the hand guns does the gun have to be a minimum of .24 caliber and produce 500 ft lbs at the muzzle.

one could honeslty hunt with the .17 remington because it falls inline with being a centerfire. even though it projects a 20 grain bullet!!

if you want an honest opinion, i've seen a 22-250 do a number on antelope, but i would highly recoment no less than a 223 50 grain setup. i've watched this take deer and even a cow elk. with a very well constructed bullet and an expert shot this min. would do the job.

i am one of those guys that will hunt and harvest and die next to my 06. i'll kill coyotes with the 55 grain saboted noslers, and shoot deer, elk and moose with nothing but the 165 grain barnes.

the only eagle with enough power and speed to kill and gut you with one shot
