Ok.. So usually the DWR in the past has just taken the money out of your account, then a week later they send you the email with your results of the unit you get, right? So that's what I figured.. I looked at my checking account to see that I got $40 taken out.. Sweet, a General deer tag that I wanted.. So I didn't think anything of it.. Then 4-5 days later, my brother asks what unit I drew out.. I didn't think they sent them out, and he said they did. Well, it went to my spam folder in my gmail.. When I clicked on it, it said.. SUCCESSFUL - Limited Entry Elk. San Juan Any Weapon.. I was in denial.. I thought for sure it was a scam or something.. But nope! With 3 points from previous years, I think I can say that I am the luckiest bugger in Utah this year. Well, for Elk hunters that is. I have been on Cloud 9 ever since! I totally can't wait!
 
Congrats, shoot a big one for me. Oh you better post some photos or we will come find ya :) just razing ya but have a great hunt and we would love some photos even if you don't make a kill.
 
Heh.. Lang, I realize that. I'm sorry for those that didn't draw out. I just figure my odds were like 1 in a million.. And I am super excited, and grateful. I'll try to post up some good pics!

I know I will be happy with what I'll get. I want a big one, because I know I won't be as lucky next time and have a good 25 Years til my next LE Hunt.. But at the same time, I can't be too picky to where I come home empty handed. I hear most people tag out by the end of Day 2 of the hunt.. And that there are just big bulls everywhere. I sure do wish you the best, and hope you have the time of your life. Goodluck on taggin the big one!

It won't be long before elk is an OIL tag in Utah... For some of us, it already would be (I have never put in for elk and I am 33).

Congrats on the tags you guys! The SJ is an unreal place. I drew archery deer in 2005 and archery elk in 2012. Both hunts I hunted with BTO and I was blessed to bring home true giants and memories I get to relive each time I watch the videos and look to my wall. The guys at BTO are some of the best guys I have ever hunted with, period. When my father in law called and told me he had drawn archery elk this year my fist call was again to BTO and we immediately booked his hunt. I would definitely take up BlandingBoy's offer to talk. He knows the SJ about as good as anyone and it would surprise you how much he will share. I recommend not leaving a stone unturned in preparing for these hunts. Send me a pm as well. Thank you so much guys. It's awesome to see such friendly guys and help with a nearly Once-in-a-Lifetime hunt, as I see it. Fortunately, my In-laws know the area, and have hunted it several times. I, on the other hand, passed my hunter's safety in August of 2010. So I'm not an experienced expert. So I'll be relying on my In-laws quite a bit. If their support falls through with their busy lives, I'm sure I will be messaging people and trying to get some tips. I have a scouting trip planned in late July, so hopefully the bulls are nearly done with antler growth, and I don't piss off the archery hunters. The time between Late July, and Sept. 13th won't come fast enough.. Lol
 
I archery hunted deer in that unit about 5 years ago. I ran into the biggest Elk I've ever seen anywhere, including photos. It was a monster! I kicked him out of a bed and he(and I) ran in opposite directions. He paused about 50 yards away and stared for a minute then walked on. Tons of Elk sign and beautiful country.

But this was the bull I was lucky enough to harvest off the San Juan this Year. After getting 2 flat tires scouting on Thursday, 2 days prior to opening day. And getting 2 more flat tires on Opening day.. I thought my luck had ran out. But after getting some info on a smaller 7x7, and not finding him. We glassed this big guy on the mountain. We had to hike up and down the mountain 3 times.. It was the most physically exhausting hunt of my life. But he has an official green score of 397 5/8" Gross and 384 1/8" Net.
