Montana family buck

This is by no means a monster muley, but it's a trophy collected as a family. My hunt in Eastern Montana this year was much tougher than normal. Turns out, someone else figured out the area that I normally hunt and spread the word. That place looked like a UT general hunt when I went out the first day. Saw very few deer and all were does or small bucks. Very few bucks were with does, and many were busted up from fighting so I think the rut ended early.

Went to a new area that few people hunt due to it being so far out of the way. Saw many deer and many were bucks but the quality wasn't high. The bucks were young and many had decent racks for their age, so they may be good bucks next year or two.

My whole family was with me this day, last day for us to hunt. I wasn't going to shoot any buck unless it was a wallhanger, but I wasn't able to fill all my doe tags so meated out with a decent family trophy.
It was about -10 with the wind chill this day.
My wife spotted some does bedded about 600 yards from the trail we were on heading to another area. As we scoped them a spike was moving up and started sniffing a doe. This buck moved out of cover and chased him off. After much discussion, my boys decided I should take this buck as we only had 2 hours shooting time left.
We moved the truck out of sight and as I got ready for the stalk, my youngest, just over 2 y/o, asked "you going to shoot that deer Daddy?" he loves to get out to the outdoors. Gets upset if we go to a mall instead of the mountains. But if we take him to Cabelas or Bass Pro, he's happy.

My oldest made the stalk with me and did great. He watched the buck while I shot and put him down for good with a neck shot at 250 yards while he was lip curling a doe. Seems the does were still in heat in that area.

I told my oldest this would be a great first buck for him. Can't wait for next season, his first season to carry a deer rifle.

Oldest with the buck.

We all know you arent going to bag a 'gagger' when you are hauling the little ones along, but that deer is a trophy that your boys will remember for a long time.(I can tell by the smile on the face of your oldest!)

By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

When it really comes down to it thats what youll alway remember is the look on your kids faces. And that all of you got to be there together! Congradulations on a successful family hunt!

That's a good buck for anyone. It doesn't get better than hunting with the family.

Particulary heartwarming, knowing that you are united with your family after your military service! Congratulations to all involved!
