Elk Ammo

I can't find my favorite round at any of the sports shops in salt lake or utah county...does anyone have any experience with "federal fusion" rounds? Do they hold together well?

I prefer Nosler partitions for the mass retention, I thought about accubond but I can only find it in 130 grains and want 150's. The guy at cabelas said the fusion is a good round and they have it in 150's.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

The Federal Fusions are a good bonded bullet. Not sure what caliber you are using, but I have a couple of friends who have used them with excellent results on elk in a 30 06 and a 300WSM in the 165 grain. I have a 270 & a 7 mm rem mag and would trust the 150 grain fusions, typically keeping my shots to 300 yards or less.

I like to use the Partitons also as my first choice, but would not hesitate to use the Fusions, since on my two buddy's elk they went completely through and appeared to cause plenty of damage to get the job done as neither went more than 50 yards after the shot. One elk was taken at about 100 yards and the other at about 150, with both being broad side shots. Good luck with your hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-14 AT 02:27PM (MST)[p]Thanks Jody. Good info. This is for my brothers hunt this year. He shoots a .270 Win.

Everybody says a .270 is too small for elk, but I shot mine last year with a 150 partition at 409 yards (ranged) with a .270 and it did the trick...he didn't go anywhere. My wife shot one 4 years ago with a .270 and a nosler partition as well and he went all of 30 yards before he killed over. I guess I have a complex :), but I hate it when everyone tells me to get a bigger gun...I just tell them to shoot better. Sure I'd love a 7MM Rem Mag or something like it for my once-every-20 years hunts, but I don't really want to invest over another grand in a gun and scope, etc. For now I'll stick with my .270 as a good all around caliber.

Any other thoughts are welcome too as I'm completely unfamiliar with the Fusions.

My daughter shoots a 270. We use the 130 grain Barnes. You can buy it loaded. It's call Barnes Vor-Tx ammo. Sportsman's just got a bunch in Monday at our store. It's a good quality hard hitting bullet. If you put it in the right spot it will take care of a elk for ya. If you need help picking up ammo let us know.

Have not drawn a bull tag yet, but I can put cow Elk down no problem w/ a .270. I use 150gr Federal Vital-Shoks (Nosler Partitions). Shot one at about 150 yards last year and it didnt move a foot from where it was shot, just dropped.
