Bugling?

Hi Guys,

I've spend the last 4-5 weekends up in the Wasatch unit scouting and preparing for my muzzle loader hunt. This year is going to be a challenging hunt for me since I have never hunted elk, never hunted with a muzzle loader, and am not terribly familiar with elk behavior.

Since I have been up there, I have heard very little bugling. This last Friday/Saturday I heard maybe 4 from 6pm on Friday into Saturday around noon. I expected to hear a bit more than that. I've also heard lots of people say that bugling started pretty early this year. Based on what you guys have heard and seen, what do you think I can expect for rutting activity next week? The hunt starts on Wednesday of next week and of course I'm getting nervous that I may not be getting much of the rut during my hunt.

Thanks,

-Travis

I have never stepped foot in your unit, however my Dad has a mzldr tag too. You will be in the rut, bulls will be screaming. Big bulls may or may not come to you, likely not if they have cows (unless you are in close).
Make sure you are practicing your calls (hope you aren't using a hoochie mama) bull and cow.

This subject comes up every year 20 times but I guarantee the rut happens in the same area every year at the same time (within a couple-few days).

I am stoked for my Dad's hunt, I know bulls will be rutting and still have cows, lots of bugling. It is very stressful, but enjoy it. Hunt will be over before you realize it :D
Good luck, hope you get a monster!

There are many things that would be nice to wish for or say but then I would be just like him.

I have a Manti Muzzy LE Elk tag. I was up there a week ago and heard a few bugles. The longer it takes the rut to get going, the better the hunt will be for the Muzzy. I had a cow tag last year at the beginning of October on the Manti and the Elk were still bugling their heads off. I am not too worried about the rut happening during the muzzy hunt, I am more concerned getting one to pull away from his cows. Good luck.

I was on the wasatch with my buddy who had an archery tag the past week. Elk are bugling but they are not leaving the cows they have right now. They are not coming into the calls at all.
I hate the UTAH DWR and that the archery hunt is so early it is a JOKE.
I go up every year during the muzzleloader hunt to just hear the bugling and try to get them on video. They are always going nuts during that hunt. If you want some ideas where we saw some good bulls but could not seal the deal PM me.

I do have a hoochie mama, but it's not something I plan on using a lot. I have been practicing more with a hyperlip double by Primos. I dont have a bugle right now and don't expect to get one. I'm afraid I will screw up a hunt using one more than it would help me since I havent really used one before.

It is usually real good during the muzzy hunt. Last few years from what I have heard the muzzy is around prime time for the bulls to be talking but as others say if a bull has cows they won't leave them. Sneak in on the bulls talking and watch the wind and for the satellite bulls getting in your way.

Big ole herd bulls are hard bulls to get away from the cows so get in close to close the deal- that has always worked for me bow hunting. Also the bulls will start moving around looking for hot cows. Cow calls are usually more effective and just use bugle to locate bulls in a drainage but you never know. You will have a fun time hunting them.

I just finished up with the archery tag. The bulls were going good the last week and then got a little quiet towards the end of the week when it got warm again. I would not worry too much. I hunted this unit last year on opening day of the muzzle hunt and the bulls were cranked. It is the best tag to have in my opinion as far as rutting activity goes.Good luck on your hunt. Here is a pic of my archery bull.

The hoochie mama makes one great sound, the bad part is the hoochie mama makes one great sound.

That hyper lip single and double is good, I'd get both. I have had bulls not answer one but answer the other, just keep trying different stuff. Don't make one same sound all season...
I usually carry three calls, plus a couple mouth piece styles.

Get the primos pack bugle, it is easy to use, small (easy to carry) and you will get responses using it. Within an hour you can have multiple different bugles (chuckle, growl etc... ) down pat. Can't learn without making mistakes :)

Don't be shy out there, get aggressive (close the distance quick and don't worry about noise). I have never had a bull come from hundreds of yards away to me, I always go to them...

I'd love to have that bull! I'm not looking for a beast, but just something worthy of being on a wall.

I really appreciate the feedback and help!

I hunted the archery hunt and there was not much bugling without coaxing it out of them. We called my bull in and killed him at 14 yds and he never made a peep! I would practice bugling to locate bulls and then slip in on them while they keep their cows together and wait for them to cross in range. On your hunt they will have all the cows rounded up and will have heard calls from two previous hunts. I don't think the big bulls will be very interested in calls. Lots of elk up there, hunt hard and you will get a good bull. Good luck!
