Hello. First time posting on here. Actually on a lot looking at pics. But just wondering if any one knows how many points is good to start sending in for elk and deer in Utah. I've got 6 of each. Not sure if I should wait and get more or try to send in and see what happens. Not sure what area to hunt. I see a lot of good bulls out of a lot of different areas.

Since it is a draw you never know so always put in for a tag and you never know when you might get lucky. Points just give you additional chances in the draw unless you have the highest number and can draw one of the tags set aside for highest points. They set aside half the tags for those with highest points so if more than one tag in draw know half of them are gone before you are drawn. But if only one tag you have just as good as a chance as the next person.

Are you committed to a weapon?

How big of bull/buck are you happy with?

Be more specific on your questions. 6 points might be enough to draw archery on some LE units. They won't be the best units but if you are ok with a smaller bull you could have a lot of fun. Another thing to know is after you draw the tag you will have a five year waiting period before you can start putting back in for that species.

Hey Shorty, has that always been the case if you draw you have to wait 5 years?

Thanks Joe

There are many things that would be nice to wish for or say but then I would be just like him.

I thought it was 3 for deer.

With 6 points you can draw a pretty awesome archery hunt. The Manti, Book Cliffs, Fish Lake, and Wasatch units are all great units that you should be able to draw for archery. I had an archery tag this year for a particular unit. Ton's of bulls in the 300 to 320 range. We saw a few that would go bigger, however, I personally didn't allow myself to get caught up in the points game. I simply wanted to enjoy the experience. My goal was to hang my tag on a mature 5-6 point bull. Had a very exciting hunt. And it all worked out in the end. I couldn't be happier.

I just want a 320 to 350 bull. A good 6 point would be awesome. I not picky. Lol. Thanks for all the info guys.

2 year wait for deer...

A 320-350 bull is not a walk in the park in a 6 point unit. You may end up eating your tag. You might be surprised how big a 300 inch bull is at 20 yards. In any case, put in and go have some fun!
