First Elk

Got my first elk ever on Sunday. Saw a few bulls Saturday and Sunday morning but couldn't get up on any of them. Mid day Sunday we spotted a couple cows out in a field and the stalk was on. They were bedded in some tall grass and we couldn't see them once we reached the field. We set out across the field and a friend spotted one of their heads about 60 yards in front of us. We sat down and knocked up. My friend cow called and the smaller one stood up and gave perfect broadside shot. I let an arrow fly and hit perfect. It walked 10 yards, gave a couple coughs and then went down. The other elk stuck around but friend shot over its back. It's just a calf but I'm still really proud of it as it was my first elk.

I used to say I wouldn't shoot a calf. Then one year my partner's brother came for his first hunt. We called in a couple cows and everything happened in a chaotic way as they came on a dead run and locked up 5 yards in front of us. He shot and killed the calf which was great for his first animal with a bow.

The next afternoon we threw the tenderloins on the grill at camp and it wasn't the best elk I had eaten, it was the best meat I had eaten and my vow to not shoot a calf was officially gone.

Enjoy. It will be very tasty!

Calf or not, that's some good hunting skill there. Hard to argue with the take by bow in open grassland. Well more impressive to me than a 600 yard shot on a big bull.

Congrats. First one is the hardest. I hunted elk for 7 years before I finally got a cow tag so I could bring one home. Since then they have come a lot more regularly.

congrats, well done! Tasty vittles right there!

There's a reason momma made you eat your vegetables! It works for mule deer too, just ask me how!

Was there still milk on the calf's lips. :)

I am just joking. The meat will be better and any adult that is for sure.
