What are your thoughts on the rut from what I observed:
Last week in Colorado 8500-9000 ft in elevation. I harvested my first bull with a bow (small 6x6). During my hunt I observed several things.
-several groups of cows (5-10) that had not a single bull with them not even a spike
-small raghorns with several cows
-raghorn or smaller bulls alone (satellites bulls)
-bigger bulls were the only bulls bugling
-elk in larger groups with several herd bulls. The herd bulls would not leave a few cows in there harem alone (they must have been in heat).
-i tried cow calling and the raghorns would not respond to calls. herd bulls would just bugle and not leave the few cows that were most likely in heat.
-the bull i harvested i cow called at he would look at me and bugle and go back to what he was doing. It wasn't until i bugled at him (last resort) that he jumped the fence and came into my lethal range.
-another hunting partner bugled in his bull he harvested
My question is if this is the tail end of the rut or its just beginning? I personally thing it was the tail end of the rut and the big bulls had the last cows in estrus. Other buddies I talked to think the rut is just getting going and will peak this weak or next weak!
