Sorry guys and gals, just needed to vent this one out. While watching a prominant show on the Outdoor Channel, a "Guy" was after a 30 inch mule deer. Nothing with kickers, had to be a muley with a 30 inch main frame. I thought this would be good since that is a hard goal to be obtained at least for me it would be. So as I watched the hunt unfold, low and behold a muley appears that looks to be at least 30 inches wide and the hunter kills it. Awesome I thought, can't wait to see it. So as the hunters make the walk to the animal, no sooner than the hunter can pick up the head, without missing a beat the "guide" whips out his tape measure to see if indeed the rack made the mark. I know we have had discussions on this before, but for some reason that really bothered me. I guess the latest and greatest hunting tool is the tape measurer. Don't get me wrong, I love big racks just like the next guy, but hell fire, it is dead, there will be plenty of time to tape it. I guess to me it showed that is the single most important thing was weather or not it made 30. Seemed that there was no respect there, maybe I just took it the wrong way, but it still bothered me. By the way it did make the mark, by a 1/4 inch. An awesome animal no doubt and kudos the hunter.

Im with you. I didnt like the emphesis they put on the deer having to be 30 wide. What happened to having fun huting. Ive shot small deer and large deer. It was fun shooting them all.

MAKES YOU WONDER???

IF THE BUCK WOULD HAVE "ONLY" BEEN 29-7/8" MAYBE THEY WOULD OF TRASH CANNED IT & KEPT HUNTING!!!

HOPEFULLY I'M WRONG!!!

BUT I HAVE HUNTED & FOUND WHERE "HI-GRADING" WAS TAKING PLACE!!!

FOR GODS SAKE!!!

WHILE HUNTING BIG GAME ITS O.K. TO FORGET ALOT OF THE GEAR BUT DON'T FORGET YOUR MEASURING TAPE!!!

WAFJ!!!

THIS IS MY NEW GUN,YOU MAY NOT LIKE IT,YOU'LL LIKE IT A HELL OF A LOT LESS WHEN IT HITS ITS DESTINATION!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THAT KNOWS ALOT OF YOU HAVE HAD THIS IMAGE IN YOUR PEA BRAIN BUT DUE TO POOR SHOOTING TACTICS I'M STILL KICKIN!!!

Here's my take. They guys goal was 30" they guesstimated the buck at 30". The guides rep and business ride on him being able to make that call. I bet he was sweating it and just wanted to put his fears to rest. Also, it sounds like the hunters goal was 30" or nothing.

This takes us back to why do we kill any animal? Each of us have a different reason. This guy wanted a 30" buck.

Let's give him a break. I didn't watch it and I don't even know what guy it is or the specifics. But I see no harm in breaking out the tape when you get to an animal if that's why you killed. We don't have to say grace over every animal we kill before we break out a tape.

"When You Deserve The Very Best"

The camera man was already at the deer - you could see the hoof in the walk up shot. My guess is the whole walk up to the deer and tape session was re-staged. It is T.V. I do agree that it appeared very results based and is not what I would have done first thing, but I think it was just a T.V. moment.

I was irritated that you had to wait through the "ad" and go back to and rewatch the walk up and the tape job - before they finally told the MEASUREMENT. It was a sweet buck.

One other thing, regardless of how the walk up and "measurement" sessions go, I am just glad we got to see some wester state muley hunting as opposed to the other programming they show all day long. . .

Why is everyone avoiding saying who this is??? They emphisized before the hunt took place what they were looking for and why. This particular family has taken tons of big bucks for them it's not the same as it would be for you and me. It's not really hunting because the guide already had this deer located days prior to the hunt. I would rather see these guys hunt in area's that aren't already pre scouted by there best buddy (a guide)and truley find a big buck that may or may not have been there in the first place. Anybody can hunt private land in some of the best mule deer country in the world and do what they did. Catching big fish in a small pond is not that tough. It's all about "MONEY" get use to it...Did you see the log home he lives in??? that didn't happen by chance. His father being famous didn't hurt either....Nice buck though.

Kingfish I'm with you on this, it really doesen't take a whole lot to pay someone money and hunt on a private ranch where people waatch these deer all year long and then all you do is pull the trigger. I have always said I would like to see half these people on TV draw a tag, research the area, scout and harvest the same kind of deer they get on these guided hunts.

Now wait everybody before you climb up my back, for those of you who go on guided hunts that is fine with me and I don't have a problem with it, it's just not for me. I take alot of pride in my DIY hunts. My father and I read magazines, talk to people, call Biologist and then try and draw a tag. After we get a tag we spend most of the summer driving to that unit if it's close enough and scoting. It feels really good to us when we do all that and get a animal, even when we don't it still feels great. Some of my best memories are the scouting trips I have spent with my dad looking for bucks, sleeping in the back of the truck eating MREs.

I hunt public land here at home and out of state and even here at home it takes alot of work to find a deer. When you do find and get a big one, to me it makes it that much more special that I did it all on my own. Plus I couldn't handle having a guide tell me when to load my gun and when to shoot. As far as the tape measure goes, well to some people it's all about size.

Yes, I watched the same show and I also like to watch the Mule deer episodes because I'm tired of the Whitetail shows. But personaly I would like to see some more Blacktail shows, now that would be entertainment.

Thais is my opinion and I'm not saying who is right or wrong this is just how I feel on this topic.

gal how many of us were watching that last night i thought the same thing.

Just Living The Dream

hey slide, you hit the nail on the head! all these guys on tv have MONEY and connections. killing a 30 incher on film is good for business, period.i'll admit that i tevo the show and read the magazine but it is kind of a slap in the face that they want you to think it was difficult. if this sounds like a jealous man,it is! wouldn't it be great to make a good living doing year around what us working stiffs save all year to do for a week. with unknown results for the avg. diy hunter, they are pretty much guaranteed what they came looking for. when they started the magazine it had very limited advertising in it,now look at it. money talks! on that note i will continue to watch the show and read the magazine but spare the BS please. we all know the real deal!

As long as it can be planned and filmed without hurting their reputation, as great hunters and businessmen...it's a go. Anymore, I watch shows just to pick them apart. It bothered me too.

I'd much rather watch a show about no-name hunters who apply in public draws, and what they have to do to fill those tags on public land without any inside connections, sponsers or even outfitters...just family and friends.

opdinkslayer, You have to admit you are spoiled with some of the hometown average joe hunting videos you get to watch that most guys don't get to see! You can't let that ruin the tv shows for you. I am glad you can admit jealously is part of it too. nwhunter

That unnamed family (Eastmans) may have money, but they are not snobs.
They have promoted ethical trophy hunting and conservaction.
And have helped many nimrods (myself inclued) in trophy hunting the west.
They are producing TV shows, so they will hunt the best areas available.
At least thay ain't killing critters on some freaking elk ranch, where you pay by the inch for the (pet) animal you shoot.
Compared to some of the fixed hunting shows, Eastmans is one of the best, in my opinion.
Although I don't agree with slaping a tape on the animal first thing when you shoot it.

Eastmans probably are great people but just a casualty of everything being dictated by BIG money.I agree they have one of the best TV shows and the best magazine. If they could lure tiffany away from lee on "gettin close" then they would have it all. Sex sells! HEY NW,maybe if you had those two guys from your elk scouting video on a little more your videos would be worth watching! Sound would be a big help to. By the way your seahawks better show up today,i would hate to kick a hole in skinny's TV.

I don't agree with the taping of the animal directly after the kill, but you know that guide was under the pressure. Having a big name like that come hunt, and he was the guide - he had to produce results.

I think the Eastman family is great for hunting. They bring the camera and put us, the viewers, where lots of shows do not. Lots of their hunts aren't a cake walk either. I don't know if you watched the prior episode where Guy harvested the nice elk from New Mexico - but that's reality hunting t.v. I wished more shows were like Eastmans. And their magazine is pretty awesome too. The Eastmans, I feel, are very respectful of their animals as well. I was watching a video the other evening, and Mike made the comment that any 170 class mule deer taken on public ground was a trophy. I was glad to hear that. That goes to show, that yes, they do focus on big, huge, bucks, but at the same time, have not lost or been pulled away from real hunting; like it really is for most of us. They are a class act in my books.
