ANYBODY ENCOUNTER A BARK???

So!

Opening Morning/Yesterday!

Of the General Pumpkin Fest/Elk Hunt!

I Start Hiking Back in!

Takes about 1-1/2 hrs to get to where I like to be & Start Huntin & Stay above other Hunters!

About 45 Minutes in to the Hike I walk almost up to a Bull & A few Cows that are Bedded,They Jump up & Run to the Right,I hear Antlers tearin Tree Branches & Thick Stuff Down in a Hurry!

So I decide to try & Pull them Back!

I Hit the Cow Call & The Bull 'BARKS' at me,lol!

Hit it a few more times & They are on their way back!

At real Close Range I see Movement!

So I hit the LED Flashlight to see what it is!(Make sure it Ain't a Bear!)

A Cow Elk moving to the Left!

I Shut the Light off!

Then I see another Movement!(Make sure it Ain't a Bear!)

A Bull & a Fairly Good one!

I lighted enough Elk in my Younger day to know Elk do not Like Light & Usually Haul Ass when they Encounter it!

Maybe LED Light is Different?

They didn't seem to be bothered by it at point blank Range!

As soon as I seen it was a Big Game animal of course I shut the Light off!

Ya,I coulda Drilled that Bull!(An Hour before legal Light & with a Flashlight!)

Can't Imagine getting Convicted/Tried & Hung here on MM!

The Bull is still Alive & Well!

My Tag is still intact!

I Got too close to several Elk Opening Morning & had 3 different Elk BARK at me!

I've had them BARK at me now & Then but I Thought 3 BARKS in one Mornin was Perty Good?

Anybody else get a BARK?

I have had younger bulls bark at me before. But, like you, to have three of them in the same morning bark at you sounds weird.

I have heard it a few times. It seems to be a warning call, but with aggressive undertones. I have seen a couple of big bulls run off smaller bulls simply by barking.

I actually got too Close to them on several occasions Opening Morning!

You can say what you want but after I wallowed in the Cow Piss for 45 Minutes before Hiking in You might say I was a Stinkin SOB but it was workin!

It is common to hear and usually done when you have been busted and they are warning other elk. I have video of a cow that pegged me down across a canyon at about 80 yards. She sat n me and barked at me everytime I had another elk approach my location. Each time the elk would swing wide past her and away from me. If I could have I would have killed that damn cow. One of the elk was a big nontypical bull went over 330!

Had it happen to us too in Wyoming Bessy -

We knew we were in their kitchen, fresh sign all over. We were sneaking through the trees with the wind in our favor. Came to a small opening, decided to set our packs down, as soon as we unclicked - the little "click" sound was just enough" a bull and some cows about 40 yards away bedded in some thick trees alerted. I first heard the "bark" - it didn't sound like a cow at all, more like a chortle - definitely a bull, then he bugled after the cows busted. My brother tried to outcircle them and cut them off, got close enough to see legs through the trees, never got a good look at the bull though.

I watched a herd of elk last year in a clearing right at dark. waiting for the herd bull to show himself. The wind swirled as the bull began bugling back in the thick trees. The cows were already out in the clear cut. One cow winded me and started barking. She pranced back and forth to alert the rest of the herd, barking as she went. It got dark before I got a chance to see the bull but the barking cow could not persuade the rest of the herd to elsewhere. I backed out of the area before things got any worse. The next morning I came back to the same place and herd the familiar sound of a bull bugling. I went down to the clearing and found a 6x6 bedded in the middle, bugling at another bull back in the trees......yes.......I missed him.......still haunts me........However......this year I went back to that same clearing, almost the same time (7:30 am) opening morning and see a 6x6 with 7 cows and.............

An elk bark means you are busted! It's their warning signal. It usually means they have winded you. Keep the wind direction in mind and you will likely hear less barking!

We had a bull bark at us on opening morning. He had swung around and came to our calls from down wind. One bark and he was gone. The rest of the herd moved farther into the canyon.

But at 15-20 Yards Max & covered with as much Cow Piss as I could poor on me I think I just got too close to them!

If it woulda been Light I woulda showed him a BARK!

I had 3 bark at me once, but it was just before closing time at the 3 legged dog!!

There is also a nervous grunt that sounds similar that is likely what you heard as they didn't take off. It is more of a "show yourself" vocalization.
